RUMOUR OFFICIALLY DENIED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A report in circulation on Saturday that defects in the machinery of the Government motor-ship Maui Pomare are such that the expense involved will make repairs false economy is denied in official quarters. It was stated today. that the trouble is entirely one of hull construction and that the engines are not concerned, but that they will have to be lifted out to enable the affected parts to be reached. Certain repairs are necessary to the interior of the vessel’s hull, and it is thought advisable at the same time as attending to these defects to strengthen Die engine foundations. It is impossible to do the work required to the hull without lifting the engines out. The repairs are to be carried out at Wellington, but the vessel will not be taken out of the water. . It is stated officially that there is no question of the present trouble being so serious as to warrant the Maui Pomare being removed from the Cook Islands service.
