SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Riverlea school committee was held last Tuesday. Present: Messrs. Chapman (chairman), Voullaire; (secretary), Turner and Eves, and the headmaster (Mr. Havre). Correspondence was received from the Taranaki Education Board concerning leasing the unused portion of the school grounds, and it was decided to inform the board that the headmaster was making use of the area. Messrs. Harre, Turner, Chapman and Voullaire were authorised to deal with certain alterations and the removal of the woodshed.

It was decided to send Mr. Hooper a letter of thanks for work done on the bicycle shed, and to ask the board to supply spouting for the shed and to paint rhe outhouses. Mrs. Harre was thanked for a donation of £1 10s, for pictures for the school, and it was decided to- apply for a subsidy on the. amount.

Messrs. Chapman-arid Turner and the headmaster were appointed the ground committee, and Messrs. Gibbons, Eves a,nd Votiliaire and the headmaster the sports committee. • ■ '■ There was a good attendance at the •weekly- euchre party last week,' the prizes going to Miss Frost and Mr. W. Hughes, while the ping pong prize was won by Mr. R. McLeod. . The previous week the winners at euchre were Mrs. Voullaire and Mr. V. Frost, and at ping pong Mr. G. Thomson. On Saturday the local boys again suffered defeat by the Mangatoki boys at Rugby by 5 points to nil, Mangatoki scoring a try from a rebound alongside the goal, which was easily converted. Mr. J. Malone was referee. The standard of play was very high, both teams being a credit to their coaches. In the tight work the forwards played like seniors, and when the ball came out to the backs neither side was afraid to throw it about. Riverlea now has two wins and two losses.

The same day the Mangatoki girls played the local girls at basketball, the former winning by two goals to nil. Miss Bremrier controlled the game. •

GENERAL ITEMS. . Mr. J. S. McKay was re-elected chair? i man of the Hawera Hospital Board at I the statutory biennial ' election yester-. day. Mr. L. S. Hulbert has severed his connection with the Hawera staff of Messrs. Hodder and Tolley, Ltd., on transfer to the Marton office of the firm. On the eve of his departure he was farewelled by the Hawera Technical High School Old Boys’ Association and presented with a set of brushes by the president, Mr. A. G. Walker. Miss A. J. Johnstone, of Hawera, secretary of the South Taranaki Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, has left to attend the annual conference of the division at Wellington. Messrs. W. E. Carter (Mangatoki) and J Cocker (Eltham) are representing South Taranaki at the Dominion conference of the Farmers’ Union at Wellington. Mesdames Carter and Cocker are attending the Women’s Division conference. Two bullocks, 58 cows, 51 heifers, 402 sheep, 42 lambs, 13 calves and 93 pigs Were slaughtered at Haivera abattoirs during May. Fees and rents totalled £94 ss. 2d. < . The membership of the* Hawera Public Library is now 550, an increase of 10 oyer that at the same time last year. Building permits to the value of £785 were issued in Hawera during June. The largest amount was £7OO for a dwelling, the remainder being for three outbuildings. ■ Five hundred and twenty-five motorcar licenses were issued in Hawera this year. The Hawera Fire Brigade .yesterday answered the third call to a chimney fire in two days. The outbreak v/as in a residence in Egmont Street. “I had three miles to go to the pictures,” was the naive excuse offered by a youth to a Hawera Hospital Board official when asked why he had left the position found for him. The relation of the story caused some surprise at the board’s meeting yesterday. Mr. E. A. Lee has been appointed employees’ representative on the Ha-; wera' Technical High School Board of’ Managers. AUROA SHOW PRIZES. . There was a good attendance on Friday evening at the social and presentation of prizes won at the recent com-, bined show at Auroa. Woods’ orchestra supplied excellent music, while Mr. H. Hartley, honorary secretary, was master of ceremonies. There was a large attendance of shooters and the public at the Eltham Gun Club's trap on Mr. J. Campbell’s property on the Rawhitiroa Road, Eltham, at the week-end, when the second and final shoot for the Campbell'Cup was held. The weather was fine,, but a westerly wind made the targets difficult to find. The results of the marksmanship, however, were fairly good on the average.- The cup was won by W. .O’Brien, of Hawera, wlio had the best average for the two competitions. At the conclusion of the match, the president ( Mr• 1 J- Campbell) expressed

the pleasure of the club at the good attendance, at the fine spirit of sportsmanship shown by the shooters during the day, and at the high standard of shooting at the trap. He congratulated Mr. O’Brien on winning the trophy, which had been given by Mrs. Campbell. Mr. W.. P. Jenkins spoke in similar terms. Mrs. Campbell presented the cup to the winner amid great cheering and cries of “Good old Bill!” accompanied by musical honours. Cheers were also given for Mrs. Campbell, and Mr. O'Brien replied, thanking all for their good wishes. He agreed with the remarks of the previous speakers witli reference to the good sportsmanship which prevailed at the club’s shoots, and expressed his personal pleasure at winning such a handsome trophy.
