WAR ON CHICAGO’S GANGS
■ - - / CITIZENS PLAN CAMPAIGN GENERAL DAWES MAY LEAD THE “ IDEAL MAN OP IRON” By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright; - ' Rec. 7.30 p.m. Chicago, June 14. It is understood that the Association of Commerce, representing 200,000 prominent citizens, will address an appeal to General Dawes, United States Ambassador in London, who arrived from London yesterday, to assume the leadership of a drive to clean up the vicious conditions in what has been termed “Chicago’s direst hour* of need.” General Dawes is looked upon as the ideal “man of iron” to captain the forces of society and wipe out the city’s underworld menace. Some hope is held of his acceptance of the post in view of the fact that he is directing work for. the 1933 Chicago world’s fair. $ A meeting will be held on Monday of the directive heads of various civic and private bodies for the mapping of a campaign against gang lawlessness, and it is believed an invitation to General Dawes may then be issued.
