OPENING OF ROAD SERIES A GRADE CONTEST GOES TO SOLN HORNER LEADS THE MESSENGERS./ The opening road races of the New Plymouth League Cycle Club’s season were held on Saturday. Good fields lined up and the weather was perfect "for racing. Two races were held —an A grade race from AVaiwakaiho to Mountain Road and back, and a messengers’"race, to Bell Block monument and back. The A grade race was won by R>. D. Sole and the messengers’ race by -T. Horner. Both -finishes were close. The races were the. first of a series 'of five races for. ‘ both A grade and messenger boys. For the A grade Mr. Aroa has donated a very .fine cup and a gold medal has been donated by Mr. R.- Yardley for- the- runner-up. For th© messenger series the-Labour Day Sports Committee has donated a cup and medal. The following officials (apart from riders) conducted the races: —Starter and timekeeper, Mr. D. George; judge, Mr. F. E. Orbe'll; handicapper and referee, Mr. Smith. Mr. A. Gable assisted with the judging and numbers, while . Messrs T. Haw, K. Ward arid G. Hughes assisted on the road. Ellis and Bocock caught Sole and Wigg, and McCann was losing ground. Berryman. was still'leading. At the factoiy on the homeward journey Berryman was eaught by Ellis, Bocock? and- Sole, and Wigg again caught -the btineh.af ter having previously dropped, brick. The finish was close, Sole -winning by ■ a length, with three-quarters* of a -length between Bocock- and’ (Ellis. ’ Wigg was a close fourth -and Berryman finished soon afterwards. Homer had ridden well arid was with Martin and Stevens not far behind Whitehead. Tuffery had lost a few seconds on Hornet Horner drew away nearing the finish and won easily by nearly 100 yards. Maritin and Stevens had a great tussle for second place, Martin finishing one and a-half lengths in front. . c.'.Cup points.—Homer 5, Martin 8, Stevens .2, Whitehead 1. The next races will be held next Saturday. The A grade is to Waitara Road (12J miles),, and, th© messengers’ to Bell Block factory (GJ miles). ; Owing to the fairly short races in the A grade first series there probably will be mo B grade series until the. second series commences, when efforts will be made to run a B grade series owing to the long races in the A grade second ' series.
