OPENING OF ROAD SERIES A GRADE CONTEST GOES TO SOLN HORNER LEADS THE MESSENGERS./ The opening road races of the New Plymouth League Cycle Club’s season were held on Saturday. Good fields lined up and the weather was perfect "for racing. Two races were held —an A grade race from AVaiwakaiho to Mountain Road and back, and a messengers’"race, to Bell Block monument and back. The A grade race was won by R>. D. Sole and the messengers’ race by -T. Horner. Both -finishes were close. The races were the. first of a series 'of five races for. ‘ both A grade and messenger boys. For the A grade Mr. Aroa has donated a very .fine cup and a gold medal has been donated by Mr. R.- Yardley for- the- runner-up. For th© messenger series the-Labour Day Sports Committee has donated a cup and medal. The following officials (apart from riders) conducted the races: —Starter and timekeeper, Mr. D. George; judge, Mr. F. E. Orbe'll; handicapper and referee, Mr. Smith. Mr. A. Gable assisted with the judging and numbers, while . Messrs T. Haw, K. Ward arid G. Hughes assisted on the road.
