FAREWELL AT RAHOTU

PUNGAREHU FAMILY DEPARTS. Settlers of Pungarehu and the surrounding districts assembled in force at tho Rahbtu hall last night to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. R. Thorne, who are leaving shortly for Papatawa, near Woodville, where Mr.- Thorne has accepted an appointment as factory manager after having been on tho staff of the Cape Egmont Dairy factory for nine years. The early part of tho evening was devoted to dancing to • music dispensed by Miss L. Gilhooley. Extras were played by Miss Corbett. Mr. G. Gray was master of ceremonies.

Meanwhile about 20 tables in the supper room were engaged in euchre under the supervision of Mr, W. Corbett, and on the final count it was announced that Mrs. R. Inder had won the lady’s prize and Messrs. N. C. Morgan and H. Pollard had tied for the men’s prize, In the play-off Mr. Morgan won. After supper, the presentation took place. Mr. W. Corbett, chairman of the Pungarehu hall committee, presided, and in the absence of Mr. M. Fleming, chairman of the Cape Egmont Dairy Company, called on Mr. H. R. Neilsou., one of the directors, who remarked that during his nine years residence .at Pungarehu Mr. Thorne had willingly assisted in any move for the benefit of the district. He had taken such a keen interest in his work at the factory that ho hold the position of cheesemaker, second in charge under the manager. Now he was receiving further promotion as manager of a factory. ’ This showed that for the man who put his heart into his work there was a big future in fatcory work. There were some men who after three or four years in a factory considered they knew all about the work. The wise manager knew that there was always something to learn. On behalf of the Pungarehu hall committee Mr. Corbett said that Mr. Thorne was one of the first to come to their assistance in connection with the erection of the new hall. He had organised a couple of concerts which had started the fund. That had now grown until they had in course of erection one of the finest halls on the coast. While regretting Mr. and Mrs, Thomas’ departure he congratulated them on their promotion. Mr. Neilson then presented Mr. and Mrs. Thorne with a chiming clock -n behalf of the settlers of the district. All, ,he said, would watch : closely. the future career of Mr. Thorne, who now had the ball'at his feet and was a man with the necessary balance to make the most of it. Mr. Thorne was greeted with musical

honours. He thanked the speakers for their good wishes and the settlers for their splendid gift. Supper was dispensed by Mesdames E. H. Gray (convenor), H. Ehrhorn (secretary), F. Grinlinton, W. Corbett, S. Renton, N. Heissenbittle, W. Lawrence, F. Smith, Misses Gilhooley, M. Newport, B. Newport, A. Corbett and Ivy Gray. Tho Pungarehu hall committee, of which Mr. Corbett is chairman and Mr. Grinlinton secretary, had charge of the arrangements.
