WAITARA SCHOOL CONTROL

COMMITTEE DISCUSSES GROUNDS. The Waitara School Committee held its first monthly meeting since the elections took place on Monday evening. The headmaster reported that the attendance for the month had been good; the roll was 359. The new assistant, Mr. Simpson, had taken up his duties. Attention was drawn ,in .the report to the untidy nature of a small piece of ground near the front entrance and a suggestion made for shrubs... to be planted. The report was adopted, arid thanks were accorded owners for the use of their cars in conveying the children to the Manaia tournament and to various agricultural plots. A thrift scheme for children was discussed, whereby children would attach stamps to cards as a nucleus of starting post office book accounts. It was decided that although the idea was a good one, it was beyond the scope of the teachers to collect and keep records. The chairman reported that .the newly erected concrete fence had cost £B3. With the gift from the trustees of the old Waitara ‘ Racing .Chib and the departmental subsidy the committee had to provide only £5. Very little ground improvement. wqrk could be undertaken during the present year, the chairman thought, owing to the Government’s restriction on subsidies, but the soldiers’ cemetery on the . .school site could be made more attractive by. substituting a live hedge in place of the iron fence. ■ . ■ , . .. The. headmaster stated the Director, •of Education considered the incorporation of the cemetery with the school grounds would be a fine .thing.'lt was decided by the committee to approach' the department on the matter.
