EGG-LAYING COMPETITION

RESULTS FOR TENTH WEEK. The results of the Taranaki iug competition to the week ending June 11 are: —

OPERA HOUSE TALKIES. “THE COUK-EYE DWORLD.” Those to whom “What Price Glory” was a treat looked for something of equal merit in its sequel, "The Cockeyed World,” which opens at the Hawera Opera House matinee to-morrow. Even if this production does not catch the same popular note as “What Price Glory” it will go down as good entertainment. Victor McLaglen takes his usual part as a real tough guy made up of muscle and cuss-words, but with .a kindly heart beneath it all. Edmund Lowe appears as his friend, even though their friendship is overcome by the bitter rivalry that exists between them and places them in many laughter-pro-voking situations. These men are two of the United States marines who call here, there and everywhere to keep Jaw and order —in a kind of peaceful war. The rivalry between Sergeant Flagg and Sergeant Quirt-—over most things, particularly women—is the pivotal point of the picture, and on this theme some excellent situations revolve, Both principals give splendid performances, while Lily Damita, as' Marianne, a dark charmer, causes no end of trouble between the two. The season is for four nights and one matinee, and intending patrons are advised to reserve their seats early. The 'box plans are at Miss Blake’s shop. FOOTBALL GYMNASIUM. HA WEP. A’S ACQUISITION; The official opening of the ne.w Hawera football gymnasium was held on Wednesday evening. Mr. E. Morrissey briefly addressed the gathering, traversing the history of the acquisition of the hall. The Mayor, Mr. E. A. Pacey, in declaring the gymnasium open, took his hearers back some years to when the Hawera. Borough Council had been asked to give a site for such a building. It had been found that It could not be managed, hut it was really just as well. If they had built a gymnasium they could not have expected to have.

such a satisfactory one as the present building, which filled the hill exactly. There had been a desire on the part of the council to see the gymnasium in proper hands, and to this end a committee representing the football clubs of Hawera had been formed. “My only regret,” said his worship, in conclusion, “is that the gymnasium is not five times as long and three times as high. Then Stan Lay could practice throwing the javelin.” Representatives of the various clubs that use the gymnasium made reference to the liberality of the council, and expressed appreciation of the facilities now provided. . Appreciation was also expressed to the. various, people who had assisted with the provision of the gymnasium, special reference being made to the work of Sergeant Henry .and Mr. C. Dahl. Before tho ceremony concluded a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the i Farmers’ Co-op. for the free use of its fierce ffiazaap for training in .the ,pasti-..;
