TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) To-night ie “classic night.” • # # * * Owners of rifting two-year-olds should not let this night go by, for the great gamble of breeding thoroughbreds ha a proved that the lowlieet strains have often produced big winners. # ' *; * # Year after year exceptional two-year-olds develop and are forced to race in handicap class until excessive weights break them down, and one of the best recent examples is the champion two-year-old of this season, Gesture. The Chief Ruler filly was entered for a few classic races, but she missed most of the “plums” through lack of foresight. . # * # * Only one classic race is decided in “Taranaki, and that event, which is to be contested at New Plymouth next February, is the 17 th Taranaki Stakes. This race carries a fine stake of £5OO and is decided over six furlongs. Horses two years and upwards are eligible, weight-for-age scale with penalties and allowances. The cable man on May 31 forgot the fact that New Zealanders etill took an interest in Australian racing, though the top-notchers were in cold storage. The Warwick Farm gathering on that date saw the Maorilanders well to the . fore.

During the past fortnight several wellknown sportsmen have suffered family bereavements, and the heartfelt sympathy brother sportsmen goes out to the'','-sorrowing ones. They, include Mr. Hjjrry Spratt, of Hawera, whose wife passed away at Palmerston North, and Messrs. H. Coyle (Wellington) and J. P. Coyle (Palmerston North), whose mother died at Petone.

It is understood that Mr. H, J. McManaway’s filly. Habit will contest two more races before her return to New Zealand. Trainer George Price reports that the filly is now at the top of her form, and that Maurice McCarten will ride her to-morrow and on the Saturday following. Mr. M eMana way would have liked to have remained in Sydney to see Habit race, but business called him home last week.

Mrs. Alan McDonald, the Awapuni trainer, is always a great patron of Hawke’s Bay meetings, and this time she is taking a team of six horses to the Hastings gathering. Three jumpers, Airforce, Bhkbeck and Corneroff, are making the* trip, as well as three flat racers, Llyn Du, Potoaform and Blacksmith. A Palmerston scribe states that Llyn Du is to be put to hurdle racing shortly. Endowed with more than usual pace, the four-year-old son of Kilbroney and Blue Lake should turn out a worthy successor to Red Fuchsia and Elicit if he takes kindly to the jumping game.

It was bad luck for Mr. L. Rathbone '(owner) and A. Quinlivan (trainer) that First Ruler broke down at Otaki, but it is hoped that the speedy four-year-old daughter of Chief Ruler and Twinlock will benefit by an extended spell. She earned her oats on the flat, and was taking kindly to fencing, and great things were expected of her. Having age on her side, she may come again.

H. Gray still heads the jockeys’ list, his score being &4, and A. E. Ellis, who is creeping up gradually, follows with 58. B. H. Morris, who was very successful at Otaki, is well up in third place with 50 wins. E. A. Kcesing has brought his wins up to 47, just one ahead of the unfortunate H. Goldfinch, who has missed several months’ riding. H. N. Wiggins (44), L. J. Ellis (4*2), A. Eastwood (37), R. Covcney (30), R. McTavish (30), K. Voitre (35), and T. Green (35) follow.

The Takanini trainer, J. T. Jamieson, with 37 wins, has a comfortable lead in the ranks of the mentors. S. G. Ware (20), J. Fryer (’2O), C. Geisler (24), F. P. Claridge (2*2), Mrs. A. McDonald (21), and H. B. Lorigan (20) come next. Well up on the list are R. Johnson (14) and W. Mantle (14). The Fordell stable has |urned out winners of 28 races, Fred JTilley and L. G. Morris sharing the hon- -( ( pyre, equally, 14 apiecp, . J ■ > '?■

The horseman who earns his livelihood over fences deserves every penny which he gets, and though several of the cheques paid over to successful riders at the recent Great Northern meeting appear quite good, these same horsemen cannot always depend upon a regular income, and ’ with accidents always possible, are forced to take the good with the bad. It is surprising, however, to see two jockeys head the list who owed their successes to the misfortunes of their fellow horsemen, Alan McDonald, who takes £2lB, and R. Syme, whose cheque was £l7l, might not have been riding but for training mishaps preventing the riders engaged for Aurora Borealis and King’s Jest from fulfilling their engagements. Other payments were as follow: H. Turner £l2O, W. Renme £7B, L. Dulieu £76, R. E. Thompson £6B, and E. Keesing £6O. Turner had more than his share of luck, but showed good horsemanship in keeping the erratic but brilliant Taumai at his fences. Rennie’s winnings might have ,been greater if Roman Abbey had not come to grief in the Great Northern Steeplechase. L. Dulieu’s score was picked up in minor placings, and R. E. Thompson has to thank Luminary for his good tally. . EKessing won the principal flat handicap on True Blood, and a minor event on Helium. H. Gray was out of luck. Ins eight mounts returning a second and a third. Nominations To-night.

Owners and breeders throughout Taranaki are reminded that nominations close at 9 o’clock to-night with the secretary, Mr. C- B. Webster. A Weathervane,

Weathervane (incidentally bred by the King) has not yet proved himself aft a sire, but he has at least one promising youngster in Observatory, bred from°the Radium mare Desmine. Observatory was unlucky to encounter that good youngster Andonum (Tippler —Andon) in the -first division of the St. Johns Bark Nursery Handicap. Observatory was quoted at B’s, but the price will be shorter next time. Oil King (Chief Ruler—Cocoanut) ran unplace in the second division. At Last!

After racing with conftitstency in good maiden company, the Tea Tray —Florita gelding Gibsontea at last broke the ice when he won the second division of the Farm Stakes, a £2OO seven furlong race. Gibsont-ea was second favourite and won nicely in Imin. 26Jsec. Florita, the dam of Gibftontea, is bred by Thurnhani from Orvieta by Orvieto — Florigold, an imported mare by Florizel 11. Just Pipped! Another minor placing was credited to Patadawn when the Kenilworth gelding Glasgow got up on the post to beat him a head in the Warwick May Handicap, run in 2min. 84sec. Patadawn, who, carried 8.1, was giving away 151 b. to the winner. Patadawn is bred by Kilbroney from Bon Chic (a full sister to Scion) .by Boniform —Lady Jean 11. by lan—Bettyfield by Ampliion. His breeding suggests he should stay on, and since going to Sydney Patadawn has had a fair measure of success at mi’ “ gatherings. Habit (Thespian— Cowl) was a 5 —2 choice in the Casula Handicap, but the public were booked for a surprise when the outsider Cool Dan (Cooltrim—Nellie Grafton) wrested the lead from the Maorilander to score by a head. Habit, it will be remembered, is a half sister to Farce, Rational, Veil. The Monk, Lady Isinglass, Mask and Co. Earlier in the day Royal Elm started in the hurdle race. He was not mentioned in the betting and ran very poorly.
