NO EVIDENCE FOR DEFENCE
FINES ON BETTING CHARGES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. William Dow and Ernest Henry Gardiner were each fined £4O by Mr. A. M. Mowlein, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Hastings to-day on charges of frequenting Heretaunga Street for the purpose of betting. The police evidence was that the accused were known to them as bookmakers, followed no other occupation, and loitered about the streets and hotels. This was considered by counsel insufficient to warrant conviction, but the magistrate held that as no evidence was offered by the defence the only thing to do was to accept the ease for the prosecution, which was all the bench had before it.
The security for appeal was fixed at £l5 15s. ,
