‘Tootball gates have shown a decided drop this season,” remarked Mr. R. Masters, treasurer of the- Taranaki Rugby Union, last night. The gross gates at club matches for the past five Saturdays of this year totalled only £475 as against £735 for the same five Saturdays of last year. Whether the cause was the interest in the British matches keeping the public away, or the “stodgy” nature of the football not attracting the public, he did not know, but it certainly showed the necessity for the union to conserve its finances. In this connection he stressed the necessity for a more strict control being exercised in the collection of jerseys after representative matches. Already this year the losses had been heavy, and it looked as if that item alone would cost the union over £6O. He recognised that members of the union could not be expected to wait round players’ bedrooms collecting the jerseys, and to overcome the difficulty he suggested that a paid official should be appointed to collect the jerseys.
