NEW USE FOR ROCKET GUN A rocket gun was' used to carry a line from '..lie North German Lloyd liner Europa, 49,740 • tons, to Pier 4, Army Base, South Brooklyn, on April 22, when tho big liner was in danger of crashing against a barge moored at the adjoining pier of the Kerr Line, while slio was being manoeuvred into her berth. The liner was too far away for the throwing of a line by hand, so the second officer, Mr. Haberman, fired a line-carrying rocket from a pistol, and the hawser was quickly made fast, checking the drift of the liner. The rocket had to be aimed high in order to avoid the possibility of injury or death to anyone in the crowd on the pier. Officials of tho line are now trying to work out a safer method of making use of the rocketgun in similar emergencies. At Bremerhaven it can be used with greater safety because of open space on the piers there. RUNIC SOLD. The White Star liner Runic, 12,662 tons, has been sold to Norwegian buyere, who will utilise her in tho whaling trade, During her 30 years’ career she has been engaged in tho England-Aus-tralia passenger trade. The Runic was requisitioned as. a troopship in 1914, and she served in that capacity throughout the war. She was in the first convoy that left Australia with troops at the outbreak of the war.
