CHROMADYNE CAN GALLOP

A CHEAP PURCHASE WAS MISSED

After Chromadyne had won, the first division of the Jervois Handicap at Auckland he was put up at auction, but failed to reach the reserve. Mr. Hannon's good hack would have been a cheap horse at 1000 guineas, as he ■svon the Carbine Plate, worth 300 sovb. io the winner, on the concluding day of the meeting. The production of Chromadyne created considerable interest at the sale and bidding for the gelding opened at 500 guineas. A Taranaki owner had an idea of purchasing the four-year-old and ■went to 800 guineas, but there the bidding ceased. Although negotiations are proceeding for the purchase of this promising four-year-old, it is safe to say that the reserve price has risen since the sale, and it looks as if a bargain W-s missed.

Chromadyne did not appear on the race track* until this season, but he quickly struck form and is now out of hack company. In his first race, the Trial Stakes at the Takapuna January gathering, he was unlucky to have to strike his colours to the smart Honiton, y.ho just headed him off again the second dry. At Avondale he beat a big field including the smart Tenakde and,

with 9.10, ho simply smothered the field in the Jervois Handicap, Goldlike and Sir Mond being among the beaten lot. To date he has started in twelve races, and hie recor.l reads five firsts, four seconds and three times unplaced. The following is the list of his races:— At Four Years. £ 2nd Trial Stakes, Takapuna 35 2nd Moana Handicap 35 Unplaced Waitoa Hep., To Aroha — 2nd Bombay Hep., Franklin .... 15 let Novice Handicap, Ohinemuri .. 100 2nd Waihi Handicap 35 ist Maunganui Hp., Bay of Plenty iff' Unplaced Huntly Hep., Waikato .. — Unplaced Eden Handicap, Auckland — Ist Chevalier Hep., Avondale .... 170 Ist Jervois Handicap, Auckland .. 250 Ist Carbine Plate ............... 300 £lOlO

Chromadyne is by Quin Abbey from Uranium, whose earlier progeny included Tinopono and that smart hurdler Royal Abbey, who is best remembered as the winner of the Mauakau Hurdles ' and the Onehunga Steeplechase on the same day at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting of 1925. Royal Abbey won many good jumping races, and as Chromadyne is reported to bo built on sound lines, ho looks like making an exceptional jumper when the time conics for him to be tried at thia department.
