RUGBY GAME IN TARANAKI.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS.
A meeting of the management committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union was held at Stratford last night.
There were present Messrs. J. McLeod (chairman), J. Goad win, R. Masters, W. A. Guy, G. B. Percy, A. H. Guy, J. 8. Hickey, E. H. Young, W. H, Moyes, C. L. Mullaney, R.«C. Rutherford, J. P,aterson, J. Garcia and S. E. Nielson (secretary). In accordance with the requirements of the New Zealand Rugby Union, it was decided to adopt for the current season the ruling of the International Board of a scrum for a forward pass, and a free kick in the case of an off-side breach arising from the pass. The attention of the union was drawn by the Taranaki Referees’ Association to the badly-flagged grounds at the New Plymouth racecourse. Mr. Moyes explained that every Saturday morning 40 flags were taken to the racecourse. He was able, from personal knowledge, to say that last Saturday the grounds vzere marked clearly and flagged properly. “This is nothing but pin-pricking,” said Mr. Moyes. “Certainly, the dead-ball line on one field cannot be marked because it overlaps on to another field, and any referee can step oil the distance before awarding a try.” Mr. McLeod said the letter was written this week and stated that there were no flags. “There is no sense in the thing at all,” he said, “for even without the flags the marking machine bought by the union leaves a line that can be distinguished 100 yards away.” “In view of the statement- of Mr. Moyes? this union is unable to understand the statement of the Referees’ Association that the grounds are not suitably marked and flagged.” This motion, moved by Mr. Masters, was adopted.
