Atmore, for the inability to increase the capitation allowances to school committees, in a letter to the Wellington association. Neverthless. the recipients are not satisfied, and decided to send a deputation to the Government. The chairman suggested an increase in the amusement tax, and another that they should keep on hammering at the authorities. The association also had a lively debate on the vexed question of married women teachers. One woman member called it a “crying shame” to see married women with husbands in good positions keeping teachers out a job. Another member said he knew of a woman who was teaching and whose husband had £5OOO a year, but he thought it must be because of her love for children. Eventually a motion was carried that when married women resigned single teachers should be appointed.
