PATEA HOSPITAL BOARD

ACCOMMODATION FOR STAFF. Accommodation of the Patea Hospital staff was discussed at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday. Mr. C. R. Honeyfield presided. Others, present were Messrs J. Lupton, H. Middleton, R. Scown, R. Watt, C. Johnston and W. Watkins. The chairman reported on the visit of the horad’s representatives to Wellington, where they had interviewed the Health Department in connection . with securing authority to provide additional accommodation for the staff. The Minister, after impressing upon the deputation the need for economy, had promised to send an officer of the department to make an inspection with a view to modifying the board’s plan. The medical superintendent reported there were 20 patients in the hospital, eight fewer than a month before. Twenty-five had been discharged and 17 had been admitted during the month. ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY. ADDRESS ON MAORI’S KNOWLEDGE The Maori’s knowledge of astronomy was the subject chosen by Mr. P. O’Dea for his lecture to the Hawera Astronomical Society on Tuesday night. Mr. A. A. Larkman presided. Mt. O’Dea showed how the early Maori voyagers had used astronomical knowledge effectively on their long voyages. Without artificial aid their powers of vision were remarkable, as they were able to see the moons of Jupiter —a feat known to be equalled only by the Eskimos, who were known on reliable authority to have seen an occultation of one of the moons of Jupiter. Mr. O’Dea stated that an interesting fact was that the Maori name for the sun, Ra, was also used by the ancient Egyptians, Assyrians and the natives of India —an indication of their probable Eastern origin. The society decided to forward a donation towards the expenses of the expedition to the Pacific to view the eclipse of the sun.

OPERA HOUSE TALKIES. “IT'S A GREAT LIFE.” “It's a Great Life,” the Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer picture starring the Dunean Sisters, which opens at the Opera House, Hawera, for a season of two nights and one matinee commencing tonight, is an ail-talking, singing and dancing film directed by Sam Wood and filmed with outstanding technicolour sequences. Hawera moviegoers have a great thrill in store for them when they seo and hear these genuinely great musical comedy stars of the London and New York stage. The new film incorporates a number of skilfully executed dance routines handled by Sammy Lee, who has received no little distinction as a result of his work in several Broadway musical comedy successes. A very capable supporting cast is headed by Lawrence Gray and includes Benny Rubin and Jed Prouty, the former being the Jewish comedian of “Marianne,” and the latter the “stuttering Uncle Bennie” of “The Broadway Melody.” A strong supporting programme will also be screened. There will be a matinee to-morrow at 2 p.m.
