E., L. ABBOTT CUPS CONTEST. The 36-hole foursome for the two cups, senior and junior, donated by Mr. E. L. Ackland is visiting relatives in the South Island. Mrs. Readon has her mother staying with her. Mr. G. Davis is on holiday in Auckland. Mrs. Wheeler is staying with her daughter, Mrs. Rustling. Mrs. Bold and her daughter Olga have returned home. They have been visiting Mrs. Fabish. Little Ethel Welch is staying with her sister at Ratapiko. At the local football match last Thursday much amusement was caused among the young ladies when the ball was kicked up a tree, by one of the players, and a little delay in the game was also caused. - .

The news of Mr. John Biddle’s death caused much regret. He was well liked and respected by everyone, old and young alike. The friends of Mr. A. Rumball are sorry to hear he is again ill.

TE WERA NEWS. The second of a series of fortnightly euchre parties andi dances in aid of the Huiakama school was held in the Te Wera hall on Friday night, when in spite of the frosty night about 50, people attended. Euchre was played until halfpast ten, when after supper supplied by the ladies the' room was cleared for dancing until after midnight. Mr. J. Garliett’s music was appreciated by all. Extras were, played by Messrs. C. Simmons and W. Elder. The prizes . for the euchre were won by Mrs. Coley and Mr. Keenan, the consolation prizes being won by Mrs. Sherlock and Mr. C. Yandle. The first of the series was held on May 23, the winners on that occasion being. Miss D. Morris and Mr. C. Simmons. In spite of the heavy frosts experienced lately there is still a fair amount of. grass, and stock is wintering fairly well. This is no doubt largely due to the . extensive top-dressing during the autumn.

GENERAL ITEMS. Rain fell steadily in Stratford throughout yesterday afternoon. With visibility thus obscured a car and a light truck came into collision in central Broadway, near the post office, biit practically no damage was done. The lorry was coming from the railway station entrance while the car was proceeding southward. The golf match for non-handicap lady members which was arranged for to-day has been postponed until Thursday.

The first progressive euchre evening of the season to be organised by the social committee of the Avon Bowling and Croquet Club will be held in the Parish Hall, Stratford, to-morrow night.

A social and dance will be held in the parish hall, Eltham, this evening in aid of the Catholic convent funds. . There will be songs and novelty dances and good prizes. The pupils of Miss Madden and Miss Wylds have been rehearsing very diligently for- some weeks, the object being the production of an' entertainment, of a musical character to be given at the Eltham town hall on Friday. The first part of the programme, under the supervision of Miss Madden, will consist of miscellaneous musical items and dancing, while the second half will be devoted to the staging of an operetta, “St. Distaph’s Day.” This should be quite a novelty for Eltham people, as the actors are all very young folks, from tiny tots to bigger one in their teens. Mrs. J. A. Rankin has charge of the musical part of the play, while Mr. F, Silver is producer. The pupils of Miss Wylds will provide the ballet. As the proceeds will go towards the school sports funds good support should be forthcoming. A masquerade ball in aid of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union will be held at Okaiawa to-morrow evening. Coburn’s orchestra has been engaged and there will be novelty and oldtime dances. A presentation will be made to Mr. and Mrs. P. Bremer, who are leaving the district. The bachelors and spinsters of Auroa will hold a ball to-morrow evening. A special feature will be a maiden waltzing competition. Wills’ orchestra will play the music. Free buses will run from IJawera, Manaia and Kaponga. Proceeds are in aid of the hockey club funds. The Hawera Orchestral Society’s concert will take place in the Hawera Opera House to-night. An outstanding programme has been arranged, headed by the brilliant English artists, James and William Haydock, solo pianist and violinist respectively. Besides the orchestra of 76 instruments there are on the programme four pupils of Hawera music and elocution teachers. Their efforts and the numbers chosen the orchestra will make the entertainment exceptionally attractive. The'following will represent the Otakeho Men’s Hockey Club to play Manaia on Wednesday at Otakeho: J. Nicholson, A. Gray, W. Herbert, H. Putt, A. Bayliss; B. Davies, C. Fergus, J. Campbell, G. Surgenor, A. Surgenor, G. Putt,. J. Laurie, F. Shirtcliffe. The grocery shop of Mr. P. W. Chindry, Eltham, was entered during the week-end, but whether anything was stolen is not yet known, A few shillings in the till were not taken. The back door of the shop was forced open, apparently with the aid of an auger and a lever.
