TRADE COMMISSIONER’S ADVICE. WHY WEAR FOREIGN HATS? “If New Zealand wants prosperity, then she should contribute to the prosperity of the Old Country,” said Mr. L. A. Paish, Britisl Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, in replying to a complimentary toast at a smoke concert which was tendered to tin GovernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, by the dairy vision of the Waikato Winter Show. Referring to the Dominion’s unfavourable trade balance, Mr. Paish remarked that last year some £4,187,000 worth of cars had been brought into the country, and that .was the reason. Of that amount £2,000,000 had gone to the United States. “If you want to have a favourable trade balance, then stop

importing American cars for 12 months and you will get it,” declared Mr'. Paish. “We believe that the Old Country can give you the cheapest transport in the world by using British cars,” he added. “If you are as patriotic as you declare yourselves to be “in this Dominion, why buy £39,000 wort- of Italian hats every year ?” he asked. “Why wear a suit made at Home or in New Zealand and then spoil it by wearing an Italian hat? There were £13,000 worth of American hats imported into this country last year; why, then, spoil your New, Zealand suit by wearing i American hat? Mr. Paish went on to say that £12,000 worth of American cheese wraps came into the Dominion last year. The best cotton goods in the world were made in Lancashire, and that £12,000 would be of inestimable benefit to Lancashire to- \ day. Then, too, frozen meat was being sent Home in Japanese-made meat ■wraps. ■ The various freezfng companys could buy the British-made article, so why not do so I
