Mr. T. S. Hickey, Opunake, who has been on a visit to Auckland, motored from the northern city on Sunday. Guests at the New Plymouth Rotary Club luncheon yesterday, were Mr. Justice Blair, Messrs. T. P. Anderson and W: H. Freeman,. New Plymouth, and Rotarian W. Day, Palmerston North. Messrs. F. J. Nathan, J. W. Gamble, N. A. Carr (Wellington), W. J. Day (Palmerston North), Simms (Christchurch), C. L. Crump and W; Gimson (Auckland) are visitors to New Plymouth. They are at the Criterion Hotel. The Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Labour, has advised the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) that he will visit New Plymouth this week, arriving by the night express to-morrow morning. Mr. W. Ambury, Auckland, and formerly of New Plymouth, arrived last night in New Plymouth. To-day, Mr. Ambury, who was the first president of the Winter Show, will officially open the 21st show. Commissioner and Mrs. J. Cunningham, of the Salvation Army, with Brigadier Scotney (Army property secretary) and Major and Mrs. Bcasy (officers in charge of the Central North Division), who have been in New Plymouth over the week-end, left for Eltham and Ha- • • wera yesterday. An Auckland Press Association message reports the death of Dr. J. Giles, aged 97. He was a surgeon in the Crimean War and a friend of Florence Nightingale. He went to Gabriel’s Gully goldfields and was subsequently editor of the Southern Cross magazine. He was a warden on the West Coast and a magistrate at Wanganui from 1?88^- ; to 1893, also a magistrate at Auckland.
