COOK STRAIT SWIM

MISS COPPLESTONE’S OPINION. Discussing the reported intention of Miss Mercedes Gleitze to swim Cook Strait, Miss Lily Coppiestone expressed doubt as to the ability of any swimmer to succeed in what she described as an extremely hazardous adventure. Describing her own attempt last year Miss Coppiestone said that she was inclined to the belief that the Strait waters were too cold for a swimmer to remain in for more than three or four . hours. Although ( the direct distance between the islands is 16 miles a swimmer, owing to cross-currents, would have to cover at least 35 miles before the objective was gained. “I have tried it once and am not anxious to repeat the experiment,” said Miss Coppiestone. “I believe, however, that the Strait will yet be crossed in eight hours by a swimmer who is lucky enough to strike a day when the tides, weather and temperature of the water are favourable.
