Rec. 12.30 a.m. Shanghai, June 8; A pathetic letter has been received from Dr. Porteous and Mrs. Porteous, who were kidnapped on March 23 at Yuanchow. Despite every effort, the victims have not yet been released. Miss Gemmell was freed a nervous wreck, and is in hospital at Hankow. The bandit chief agreed to release Dr. and Mrs. Porteous for 3000 dollars cash and 1200 dollars worth of medicine, but his bandits refuse to carry out the order unless paid the original sum demanded —60,000 dollars. & Dr. Porteous says they are suffering terribly, and whatever is done must be done quickly. .•.
