STRATFORD JERSEY SALE

ONLY 27 ANIMALS SOLD FEW BUYERS AMONGST CROWD MOST OF CATALOGUE PASSED. There were from 150 to ’2OO persons occupying the benches of Newton Kings dairy shed at ‘Stratford on Saturday for the annual eale of pedigree females conducted under the auspices of the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club, but very few of them were buyers. In fact, when the half-dozen buyers had tilled their requirements the sale slumped badly and out of 110 animals actually at the sale only 27 changed hands. Of these Mr. F. Phillips, Otorohanga, secured eleven. ' . The sum of £789 12s was involved in the sales, Mr. Phillips leaving £454 in the*district. He was especially interested in the heifers offered by Mr. E. J. Kirkwood, Stratford,, and frequently started a typy beast that met his eye off at 50 guineas. It was unfortunate for the vendor that there were not one or two moneyed breeders also after the stock. As it was Mr. Phillips soon outbid competitors, but declined to rise to the substantial reserves placed especially on the pure Island stock. Thus a couple were passed in at 110 guineas ’ and three or four others at bids' ranging from 60 guineas to 75 guineas. The highest price paid was 70 guineas for a fine two-year-old heifer, Golden Fern’s Precious, by Golden Fern’s Oxford Lad out of Twylish’s. Golden Beauty, bred by Mr. E. J. Kirkwood, but Mr. Kirkwood refused bids of HO guineas on each of two heifers of pure Island blood, the one out of Brampton Farm Sweetbread (imp.) and the other from Ida’s Lassy (imp.), the sires being Golden Fern’s Oxford Lad and Meadowvale Retreat respectively. For these, Mr. Kirkwood held firmly to his reserves of over 200 guineas. Twenty-one heifers found new owners, at an average, price of 28 guineas, while the six mat-, ure cows sold averaged 30 guineas. With such a large number passed in the sale must be regarded as disappointing for the club, whose aim in promoting the fixture was to give the smaller breeder a chance of disposing of surplus stock under favourable conditions. Tire club did all possible to assist - buyers and the inspection committee, Messrs R. J. Linn and S. Gadsby, rejected 10 entries whose condition was likely to lower the general high quality )of the catalogue. The sale.- was conducted by the Farmers’ Co-op. and Newton King, Ltd., in conjunction, Messrs C. Williams, C. G. Trotter and P. G. Budd being the auctioneers. Details of the sales are:—
