NEW PLYMOUTH WINTER SHOW.

With the opening of the twenty-first Winter Show in New Plymouth to-mor-row the “junior partner” of the Agricultural Society may be said to have grown up and taken its place permanently among the "social events of the district; Since its inception the Winter Show has been regarded more or. less as the farmers’ “holiday show.” It is held at the time of year when dairy farmers have more leisure than during the summer months, . and though by demonstration and competition the more serious side of the show is by no means neglected* the fact remains that to many people its importance as a social function makes the greater appeal. . The Winter Show may also claim to be a vivid manifestation of the good work that can be accomplished by co-opera-tion between town and country. In its younger days the show had many difficulties to contend with, and it seemed at one time doubtful if its virility would prove equal to the strain. It was the warm support afforded by the business community of New Plymouth that saved the situation, and the cooperation .of town and rural workers in making each \ year’s show a little better than the last shows no sign of flagging. The “majority” show which opens to-morrow breaks records in practically every department of exhibit or competition. Given good weather a new record in the number of visitors may also be expected.. The value of the winter show is proven by its continuance and growth, for it is an axiom that no amount of effort can keep alive social movements in which there is no real interest manifested by the public. The New Plymouth show is not only, an expression of town and country cooperation, it is, or should be, the opportunity for quickening the z . same spirit in many directions and for the benefit of the whole community.
