THE LATE DR. STUBBS
BRILLIANT NEW ZEALANDER. The late Dr. Clifford Stubbs, who was assassinated at Chengtu, tho capital of the province of Czechwan, Central China, was a New Zealander, being a son of the Rev. S. Stubbs, formerly Presbyterian minister at Feilding and Rotorua. Dr. Stubbs had a brilliant high, school career, and entered Canterbury College, as a junior scholar, graduated B.A. with a senior scholarship and took .his M.A. with double firstclass honours in 1910. lie was awarded an Exhibition Science Scholarship and proceeded to Liverpool University, where ho graduated Doctor of Science. His thesis for this degree was read before the Royal Society. Throughout his university career Dr. Stubbs took a keen interest in the Student Christian Movement, and on the completion of his studies volunteered for missionary ervice. Ho went to China in 1913 under tho Foreign Missionary Association of tho Society of Friends. Ho was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of West China at Chengtu and had resided there ever since. Dr. Stubbs leaves a wife and three children. His only sister, Mrs. E. W. Kirk, was a missionary of the New Zealand ' Presbyterian Mission in South China,’and is now resident in Hongkong. His brother, Dr. Eric Stubbs, is a medical practitioner in > Oamaru. His father is living in retirement in Sydney.
