SCHOOL COMMITTEE AFFAIRS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Opunake school committee was held on Thursday evening. Members present were Messrs. G. ’ Hutton (chairman), T. •P. ; Hughson, junr., A. Hinch, 8. Bier, H. H. Gilshnan, A. K. McNae and A. Raynor (secretary). The headmaster, Mr. W. H. Burgess, reported the roll numbers and average attendances for May as follow: Secondary roll 51, average 46; primary 186, average 164. Miss E. Henry commenced duty on May 26. Since returning after the holidays the pupils had taken up winter games—the girls basketball and the boys football. The girls’ games were controlled by Misses Scarrow, Henry and Carryer and the boys’ by Mr. Caigon and the headmaster. They were grateful to Mr. James Wilson for the gift of a match ball for Rugby and to Mr. Hughson for donating a bastketball. The girls were in need of two seta of basketball goals, one for the primary and one for the secondary. The headmaster’ recommended that the

committee consider purchasing a piano !• for the secondary departTnent. The headmaster was empowered to procure the g mis for the basketball . and necessary fuel. The chairman reported that Mr. L Fischer was willing to allow his pedigree Romney rams to be used for demonstration purposes in the agricultural classes. The headmaster will confer with the agricultural instructor in regard to the oiler. The secretary was instructed to write to the board seeking some definite and satisfactory solution in regard to the heating apparatus in the secondary department. There are no fireplaces in the .school and the rooms during the cold weather are chilled. Mr. i McNae mentioned that motorists were speeding past the schools. He said fast driving was “getting over the odds.” After a good deal of discussion the committee decided to write to the Town Board stating that, the committee was willing to co-operate with the board in having suitable warning notices erected near the schools. Mr. Dempsey is to be written to asking if he has consented to nomination for the Opunake district ward of the Taranaki Education Board.
