A unique ship reconstruction and. refitment job, costing over £lOO,OOO, was carried a stage further last month, when the bow and old mid section of the Anglo-American Oil Company’s oil tanker 1 Cadillac were floated out of the dry dock at the Palmers Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd;; where the vessel had been cut in three and the new midsection launched a. short time ago was floated in. The old bow was floated back into position, and the three portions were being joined up. The operation of cutting the vessel into three parts took only a fortnight. It was estimated that she would be' joined up by May 17. and trials carried out before the end of the month. This repair job will be of interest. inasmuch as such an operation has never been carried out before. During the war the Cadillac was a Government transport, and was torpedoed in 1918. The new mid-section is over 300 feet long and 66 feet broad, and contains 4000 tons of British steel. “Refitting in the ordinary way would have meant laying the ship up for four months,” said Mr. K. J. Balsillie, manager of the shipping department of the Anglo-American Oil Company. “By building a new midsection, we have the advantage of using entirely new materials, thus avoiding loss of time on future repairs, and the ship ,will be laid up for only seven weeks.” ■
