The settlers of Kokiri, Mariaia. and Normanby Roads paid a surprise visit to the residence- of -Mrs. J. Soothill, Kokiri Road, on Tuesday evening to say farewell and make a presentation to her on the. eve of her departure for England for £wo ; or three years’ holiday. Mrs. Soothill ad family have been in the district for 20 .years. Mr. J. A. G. Cosgrove presented Mrs. Soothill, on behalf of all present, with a rug. # # * *

At a kitchen tea tendered last week in the Tokaora Hall to Miss Vera Griffin, who m shortly to be married, there was an attendance of about 130 persons. Messrs. J. Smillie And. S. Thrush referred to the' popularity of both Miss Griffin and Mr. Colin McDonald, wishing them happiness and prosperity. Dancing to music played, by Mrs. Bennett occupied. most of the evening. The progressive euchre prizes were won by Mrs. Peacock and Mrs. Stewart.

On Friday week a kitchen tea was' given to Miss Ailey Loader, by Mrs. Lewis and Miss Green on the occasion of her approaching marriage. The.function, which was held in the Carlton, was largely attended. Games and dancing were’the order and recitations were given by' Miss N. Kent and Miss N, Turnbull and songs by Miss A. White. Miss Kelland and Miss Harrison played a .violin and piano solo respectively.

Three tables of bridge around a large fire made a very pleasant evening for those guests whom Miss Anne Page invited to her home on Friday evening in honour of Miss P. Bell, whose marriage takes place this week. The guest of honour received gifts of china. The hostess to receive her guests was dressed in a frock of black georgette finished with hip flowers of red roses, while the guest of honour wore a handsome frock of black lace made on very long lines, finished at the back and hips with sprays pansies, with this was worn a coatee of black lace and georgette. Those present were Miss Bell, Miss M. Page, Miss V. Mogonie, Miss Green, Mrs. Swinburn, Miss E. Buist, Miss D. Meryick, Miss'-B. Ryan, Miss R. Pease, Miss S. AA’asher, Miss M.' Powdrell.

On Monday evening the AVomcn’iS Club reading' circle held a pleasant evening, reading the play “Hay Fever.” The readers were Mrs. Freyberg, Mrs. O’Callaghan, Miss Knight, Mrs. A. M. Alurdock. Aliss Cameron. Airs. Aleredith’s drawing room was decorated with autumn flowers and red berries when she received a few of her friends at afternoon tea. Opportunity was taken at a function arranged by the Ilawera Tennis Club last week to bid farewell to Mr. H. Wiggins, who has been transferred, to Kaikohe, North Auckland. Mr. 11. IL Leece, the club president, . said that much as they regretted Mr. Wiggins’ departure, they congratulated him on his promotion and wished him every success. Mr. Leece presented to Mr. Wiggins an attache case. The evening was spent in playing progressive bridge and in dancing. The bridge prizes were won by Miss W. Huggins and Mr. G. Ironside. Miss B. AVOMEN’S DIVISION DANCE. The Oakura branch of. the AA’omen’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a very successful dance in the hall on Wednesday. This was organised by Airs. W. Cochran, vice-president of the branch, and Mesdames Haskell and Penwarden. The branch fund benefited considerably by the proceedings. Supper, which was home-made, was given by members of the branch and was highly appreciated. Card tables were arranged for those who did not dance and prizes for euchre were won by Airs. Staveley and Airs. AValsh and Aliss Rusling (booby), Air. T. Smart, Mr. E. Haskell and Mr. J. Elmslie (booby). The winners of the novelty dances were Aliss Doris Haskell and Air. B. AALadsworth (spot waltz) and Airs. Farnham and Air. AVatson (Alonte Carlo). The prizes for these dances were given by Aliss Haskell, while Airs. E. Penwarden and Mrs. Haskell gave ladies’ and men's prizes respectively for euchre. Songs were given during the evening by Aliss R. Luxton, Aliss Rusling, AlissLawrence and Mr., Lawrence, and recitations by Aliss Lucy Knight and Mr. Guscott. Accompaniments were efficiently played by Aliss Lawrence. The dance nnisic was by Afessrs Phil. Afcredith and Guscott, and Airs. AV. K. Aforris played extras.
