WAITARA COURT
CIVIL CLAIMS SETTLED. PROSECUTION OF MAORIS. Several Maoris were prosecuted for various offences in the Waitara Court before Mr. R, W. Tate, S.M., yesterday. As a sequel to a visit paid by Constable A. J. Mills to the Bridge Hotel, Waitara, on the evening of May 5, sev- , eral Maoris were charged with being on licensed premises after hours. No excuses were offered although it did not appear as though they had been drinking and the licensee was unaware of their presence in the commercial room. Henry Paul, who appeared, was fined 29s with costs 21s, and Ted White, who also appeared, was fined 20s (costs Iss). The others who did not appear were fined—William Lash, £2 (costs 10s), Wen ; j, 20s (20s); Jim Bailey, 20s (15s). • ■ ' ■...' On the information of the inspector of the Clifton County Council Edward G, Priar and Charles Marsh jun. were prosecuted on charges of having inefficient brakes, and were each fined 20s (costs 31s), It was stated that both lorries had failed to pass a braking, test on the test hill on the Main North Road The Waitara Borough inspector, L. T. Kendrick, proceeded against a‘ Maori youth, Roy Patu, on a charge of dangerous driving in Waitara on April 8. Mr. I. Prichard, who appeared for the council, said there were two owners concerned. The other driver, had been dealt with .at a previous' sitting of the court. Both had been seen driving with excessive speed across the bridge and up the hill to the eastward. An accident nearly occurred when another car was met, as both the cars were abreast. Patu.. pleaded guilty and had nothing 10 ..say,,.: The'- magistrate -warned ’ him that his license -.might bo suspended unless more care was exercised in the future. Patu was fined 30s (costs £2 ss). Judgment by default in civil cases was given in the following cases: —F. H. Ogier y. :Riu Batley, £7 6s (costs £1 I7s (Id) ; O. .J. Mitchell v. Riu Batley, £5 5s 4d (£1 17s 6d). James Edwin was ordered to pay the Farmers’ Co-op. £24 Ils 4d (costs £1 Us 6d) forthwith, in default 21 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so • long as defendant pays £3 monthly for three months and £5 monthly thereafter. L. Rattenhury was ordered to pay Nicholson, Bennett and Kirkby 5s forthwith, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. On the plaint of Fitzgerald and O’Neiß, Sydney Sutton was ordered to pay £46 17s 4d (costs £1 Ils 6d), forthwith, in default 21 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as the defendant pays £4 a month,
