BRITISH NAVAL ACTIVITIES
PROTECTION FROM PIRATES. British Official Wireless. Roe. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, June 4. Mr. A. V. Alexander stated m the House of Commons in reply to a question that the- British naval forces m Indian naval waters had not recently been strengthened and no cruisers had been ordered from the Mediterranean to India. Mr. Alexander stated that no changes were contemplated in respect to the status of Malta as a naval base. Tho Foreign Secretary stated x that temporary arrangements for the protection of British ships against Chinese pirates by military guards were being continued for the present, but an agreement had now been reached with the shipping companies regarding a form ol extended police guard organisation which would take their place. The necessary steps to put. the system into effect were now in hand and it was hoped to begin the supply of these guards in lieu of the military at the beginning of July.
