PROGRESS .OF ROAD WORKS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) : . Flying in the school grounds for the first time for many years, the Union Jack fluttering from the newly-erected flagpole presented a pleasing sight on Tuesday. The flag was purchased and the erection of the pole subsidised by the Egmont troop of the Legion of Frontiersmen, with the hope that the teaching of loyalty will be encouraged and facilitated. As the flagstaff was only completed on Monday night, Lieutenant E. Corbett, troop leader, hoisted the flag on Tuesday morning. The official handing over will take place at an early date. Monday night’s euchre tournament was well patronised, the winners being Mrs. S. Roebuck and Mr. L. Carey. The revenue derived from these functions has enabled the baths committee at last to get rid of its debit balance. Despite the’ wet weather good progress has been made with the earthwork on the Upper Pitone Road. The continual rain has made conditions rather trying for the relief workers, but steady progress has been maintained on all tlie sub-contracts on Carrington Road.
A start has been made to form a mile at the top of Dover Road. As the earthwork is very light, this section should not take long. South of the junction of Dover and Carrington Roads for about 30 chains some very heavy work is being undertaken, as there are several large cuttings and fillings on this section. As the use of a team is only practicable in one of the cuttings, the shifting of the spoil by barrow makes progress slow. The survey for the three bridges is expected to commence next week, but their early completion should not be expected as over 2000 yards of cutting will have to be done before the Mangatete bridge can be proceeded with. A motor-lorry belonging to Mr. R. F. Roebuck met with a mishap and capsized near Leith Road on Wednesday evening. Goods were strewn across the road and the .cab was damaged, but the driver was unhurt. Mr. and Mr-. C. G. Cock-sedge left on Thursday fob the Manawatu district on holiday. Owing to the serious indisposition of her sister Miss Walton has returned to Wellington. ... The Revs. J. Adams and H. Sinclair left on Wednesday for Marton to officiate at the wedding of Miss Mary Dommett to Mr. Ken Hbneyfield, of Tataraimaka.
Mrs. Honnor is staying with her mother, Mrs. H. J. Webb. After 20 years* of faithful service, during which by her many kindnesses and obliging manner she had earned the deep respect of local residents, Mrs. C. G. Hey cock relinquished the position or postmistress on Monday. Mr. K. Whitelaw is acting as relieving postmaster for a month.
