BOOKMAKER’S DAY’S WORK THIRD APPEARANCE IN GOURI 1 . MAGISTRATE MAKES FINE £250. By Tolcgraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Arrested by detectives at 2.30 this afternoon, Thomas Phillips, aged 58, was fined £250 when he appeared an hour later before Mr, T. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Police Court on a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker. He pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said Phillips had been betting in Wellington since 1920. When he first came under the notice of the police in 1922 he was fined £lOO for keeping a common gaming house, ; ’and in 1924 he was again fined £lOO on a similar charge. ■ Phillips, the detective-sergeant added, was a married man with a family. He had taken II bets that day, the largest one being for £5, He had £64 13s. in his possession when arrested. Accused was betting in a'very substantial way and was regarded as one of the “medium” type of bookmaker. Accused had nothing to say in reply to the charge. The Magistrate said the maximum penalty was £5OO, or two years’ imprisonment. Accused was allowed one month in which to pay the fine, in default six weeks’ imprisonment.
