SYDNEY'S BIG BRIDGE
THE AMATEUR EXPERTS.
DISMAL FOREBODINGS.
Progress on the Sydney Bridge is now so marked that the two ends may meet ere the last quarter of the year begins, says the Sydney correspondent of the Melbourne Argus. Dr. Bradfield, engineer-in-chief, rejoices that when that stage is reached the maindifficulties will cease. There are others who think otherwise. It is true that they may not be nearly so vyell informed, but they have some attention. This is not surprising. A city street is never opened up—and there is an average of about one a week—without attracting a group of uncertificafed and self-appointed civil engineers who are able to tell everybody within hearing just what ought to be done or avoided.
The group advising the public on the bridge is much larger. It conveys its views under all sorts of conditions—-in clubs, in the streets, on the trams, trains and ferries. “The bridge is a blob,” said one of the thousand or more authorities in this classification. “It will never stand up to its work." '. Genuine engineers are also heard expressing thoughts in support. They have not the information justifying their deliverances, but nevertheless say that they are sure that the two ends will not meet on the exact level. “No, sir, not by feet." They are equally sure that’ after a very hot day a cold southerly will chill one side of the bridge, while the other remains hot, “and then anything may happen.” When these are confounded by seeing the arch exactly complete, dire foreboding may cease.
