INGLEWOOD ANGLICANS

ST. ANDREW’S ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual, meeting of St. Andrew’s Anglican Churcli, Inglewood, was held on Monday evening. The vicar, the Rev. J. N. Thompson, presided over a fair attendance.

The vicar’s report stated that since last annual meeting many well-known faces had been removed. Mrs. Welham, for many years a faithful member of the church, had died. During the past few months there seemed to have been a general exodus of church people. Mr. and Mrs. arid Miss Roberts had gone to England, where they intended to reside. Miss Hanierton, who has done much for the church, had gone to New -Plymouth, and Miss Brown, who did such ex'cellerit work as president of the Ladies’ Guild,, had gone for a trip to England. Mr.' H. Brown, who helped im reading the lessons, had been transferred to Taumarunui and Mr. Coldwell had been transferred.' Lately Mr. Rust, Norfolk Road, had left. The vicar thanked the lay readers, Mr. Ward and Mr. the choir, the organist Miss Wilson, the vestry, the Ladies’ Guild, the Girls’ Friendly Society, Miss A. Parfitt, superintendent of the kindergarten, and Mr. Henderson, who looked after the parish hall.", “If there is one work more than another which seems more encouraging it is the work with the children,” the vicar said. “Here we have the Soldiers of the Cross, who meet every Friday evening and Sunday. I believe practically all the children come of their own freewill and this is the reason they are so keen. They number about 05. The kindergarten has a roll of approximately 20 children. “Thanks to a most generous response to my appeal I was able at Christmas time to give help to several poor families of the district. Always there are some of our people on the sick list and in tl:- 1 hospital. I visit the hospital ■ every Wednesday and those sick in .the parish as occasion demands. ■ “Religious instruction is given, in country schools and at present I visit seven schools.. The bishop visited .Inglewood during the year and administered the holy rite of confirmation to 23 candidates. This year there have been 967 communions made,' in comparison with 945 the previous year. The total is even better than it looks as the year ending March 31 had no Easter, Eastei coming on the last Sunday of the previous financial year and this year after the year had closed. “Since last annual meeting the Tarata district has been added to Inglewood. There services are held once a month. The Parish Magazine has been enlarged and is now known as the Parish News.” The vicar paid a tribute to the work of Mr. Brown as people’s warden and of Mr. Parfitt as vicar’s warden. “I do appeal to you to try to realise the primary purposes of Sunday and. put your worship first,” said the vicai. “Surely one is all the happier for a Sunday in which one goes to. communion and then sees to the recreation of the mind by the reading of a good book or the recreation of the body by some . kind of exercise, following it all by joining together at evensong in the spirit of thankfulness.” , The secretary, Mr. ..Parfitt, read the balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of about £lO. Mr. Brown, the people’s warden, congratulated the parishioners on the year’s work. He specially praised the vicar for the way lie wa's" working mong the children, and the ladies’ and girls’ guilds which had raised over £2OO during the year, paying £175 off the church building debt. The election' of officers resulted:— Vicar's warden, Mr. Parfitt; people s warden, Mr. F. H. Brown; vestry, Mesdames Evans and Buinip and Messrs. Dansie, Fea ver, Peacock and Hinge; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Parfitt; delegates to Archdeaconry Board, Messrs. Brown, Parfitt and Dansie; auditor, Mr. Wanklyn.
