TARANAKI REPRESENTATIVES

TRIAL FIFTEENS SELECTED.

PROBABLES VERSUS POSSIBLES.

The selection of the team to represent Taranaki against the British team has advanced another stage, with the announcement of ' the personnel of the teams that have been selected to take part in the final elimination test at Stratford on Thursday, when Probables and Possibles will meet. '

As the result of witnessing the play in the North v. South match at Inglewood last week ,and as the result of his own observations in club matches, the sole selector, Mr. W. A. Guy, has shown that Taranaki Ims some good material, at any rate in the forwards. He ha® not relied solely on the men seen in action last Thursday, but is giving other men an opportunity, notably W- Crawford (Old -Boys’, hpoker), Twist <qn-l : S. Fopkes (Jyapopga and Qld Boys’ rovers'),' tViiieera (Waiinate centre), Maingay (liiglewbod half); and’R. Guy (Okaiawa -forward). Whether by design or by chance tfie balance has. .been kept equal, between North and South, as of the 30 players in", the two teams 15 come from each end, and the reserves, too, are evenly divided. However, from the public ''riedvpoint' it r; is' immaterial • where the team' eom'cs from as -.long as The strongest fifteen available i®. selected. ■ , . ■■ It- is' probable that'the selector will aini- at aoildity- rather than take any risks ‘against the visitors.' - -It is therefore practically certain that Owen and Johnston will again fill the five-eighth positions. On Brown’s form he should be a certainty for centre three-quarter, but in view'"of the shortage: of wings of class the selector is giving him a trial at that position and he should prove a. success "there,.-toxrp nrovidhig- the centre position can be filled. In view of the fact that the province possesses two full-backs-of class, ope would have liked to have seen Hunt tried at centre three-quarter, where he should make good. Then, with .Watson at. his best on the. other. > wingy. Taranaki should possess a very dangerous scoring line as well as a solid defensive one.

The half-back position is a difficulty, as neither of the three. candidates has had a great deal of experience. R. Hohaia is very tricky and clever, but he is not very, sound when up against it, eo that. Thursday’s~ game' should throw more light on the position. AH will be pleased to see that Maingav is to be given his chance, though if 0. Brown is at hie best he should be the final choice. As far iis rbveiH.ia concerned A. Guy, fit and :We'll/ shbuld fill the bill. Baldwin, "Kiyell, ■ Ward and Walter are certainties for the' forwards, and for the fifth position there are plenty of candidates. Choice of hookers may lay between Williams, Young and Gargan, though Crawford-is just the type to make good. ■ The teams are-:— . -■■■ * • PROBABLES. •I ' Full-back:■ Coffins (Stratford). •Three-quarters: :J.
