HUSBAND’S EVIDENCE AT INQUEST

Napier, Last Night. Mrs. Mary Kingsland, an elderly woman, wife of James Kingsland, of Pe Awa, Napier, was knocked down and killed instantly yesterday afternoon by a motor-lorry driven by Reginald Frank Hunt, of Hastings. Airs. Kingsland had just crossed the railway line at Todd Street on a bicycle., and was p-acceding towards town when a lorry from the opposite direction knocked her off the machine. She fell under the lorry, and the front wheels passed over her, dragging her some yards before it could be stopped. A constable took charge of the lorry and drove Hunt to the police station, where he was detained on a charge of being in charge of a motor vehicle while in a state of intoxication.

The inquest on Mrs. Kingsland was opened this morning before the coroner, Air. A. Al. Mowlem, S.AI.

James Kingsland, husband of deceased, said she was 62 years of age, and her sight and hearing were 'good. Witness reached the scene of the accident: soon after it occurred. Someone pointed out to him Reginald Frank Hunt, and told him he was tlie driver of the lorry. Witness told a constable on the spot that Hunt was drunk, and witness noticed as Hunt went off with the constable that he could not walk steadily. Witness had no doubt .Hunt was drunk. The inquest was adjourned.
