'arrangement of trips. The Stratford Montain' Club has arranged for conducted trips at early dates and to purchase equipment for winter sports. A party will go to the house on Saturday to plant sample shrubs and trees. Other trips arranged are: — May 11: Tramp to Curtis Hut and down the Kapuni Gorge to Wilkie’s Poo] and back to the East House. Mr. F. Addis will be leader of the party. May IS: Picnic at the Stratford Plateau. Working bees will be formed with a view to developing the skiing grounds and other winter sports. May 25: Members will meet members of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club at the Plateau and together tramp*to the North Egmont hostel, where they will meet members of the North Egmont Alpine . Club. . June 3: Day on Stratford Plateau. ' June 8: Climb to the Policeman. Mr. A. White will be leader. FINISH OF BOWLING. STRATFORD CLUB WINNERS. To a meeting of the committee of the Stratford Bowling Club last night it was reported that club .competitions held during the year had been won as follow: Singles championship, A. H. R. Amess; B championship, W. Ewing; colts’ championship, K. 8. Ewing; handicap pairs, W. Harris (skip), C. J. Hickson (lead); Easter pairs, A. H. R.Amess (skip), K. S. Ewing (lead); Labour Day pairs, J. S. Lyons (skip), C. J. Hickson (lead); full rink competition, A. Bake, C. W Higgs, J. Butcher, J. S. Lyons (skip). It was agreed to hold a euchre party and smoke concert at the pavilion on or about June 5, when the presentation of trophies and prizes would take place. Arrangements were made for painting the pavilion, and Mr. G. Smart was deputed to ascertain the cost of a new honours board for a record of B champions. The financial position of the club was reported to be satisfactory. Congratulations were extended to the rink skipped by W. Harris, who recently won the Diggers’ Cup, the secretary reporting that the cup had been handed to the town clerk for display in the Stratford municipal show cabinet. EDUCATION IN COUNTRY. PROGRESS OF TOKO SCHOOL. The year opened with a credit of £25 13s and outstanding accounts amounting to £8 Ils and closed with a credit balance of £ll 12s 9d, stated the report submitted to the annual meeting of householders of the Toko school by the chairman (Mr. T. T. Murray). Capitation amounting to £8 15s and a subsidy of £7 IDs Id had been received since, leaving a credit on hand at the date of the meeting of approximately £27 17s Nd. The chief items of expenditure had been cleaning and sanitary £2l 12s lOd, fuel £lO, swings £B. The main sources of income had been capitation £34 Ils, raised locally, and grazing £ll 17s. Working bees of members had ent hedges and generally cleaned the grounds as well as altering some of the fences to cope with weeds. Swings had been erected, A successful school concert had been held in December. The teachers, Mr. Abraham and Miss Scott, and the children were to be complimented upon their work.

The committee recommended the refacing of the portion of the school grounds that was tar-sealed, but was now in a 'bad state of repair. That work would cost approximately £37 but was very; necessary. The chairman thanked the county engineer (Mr. J. W. Spence) for his help in preparing a plan and estimates. Earlier in the year Miss Scott, who had been with the school for a number of years, had left to take another position. The committee and residents of the district had 'combined to give Miss Scott a farewell, the. large attendance at the function indicating the extent to which her work had been appreciated. Miss Sage had been filling her . place temporarily'. The school had made admirable progress both from a sports and an academic viewpoint under the administration of the headmaster, Mr. Abraham, to whom Mr.’ Murray extended thanks for his co-operation with the committee. The chairman also thanked the secretary and the members of the committee for their support.

Mr. Gernhoefer was appointed chairman of the farm and gardening section, Mr. J. M. Smith judge and Messrs. J. H. Ward, Al. Steiner, N. Al. Knox, Reg. Wellington, A. T. Sulzberger, H. Shields, E. Bayly, Russell Sextus, T. T. Alurray, .1. Stewart, J. Shotter and A. W. King stewards.

Mr. 11. C. North was appointed chairman of the art and photography section, and. Mr. J. McAllister judge. For the poultry section, Mr. Cliff Murray was appointed chairman, with the following stewards: . Messrs. H. Kirkwood, C. J. Gibbons, Jos. Steiner, F. Weston, W. Cannon, W. Davis, W. Hardy-Jones, L. Carman, Stratford, are on holiday in Wellington. They left Stratford on Thursday. Constable Gill has left on a holiday visife to Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa. GENERAL ITEMS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. has received the following cable dated May 7 from’its London office : Butter is 128 s to 13'0s. The weakness is contributed tb the Continental market. White cheese is 82s to 84s and coloured S7s to 88s on a quiet market. Cups have been donated by Mr. F. T. Hale and Mrs. W. Cannon for the Stratford winter show. Mr, H.
