MASTERTON AERO CLUB
RECOGNITION BY GOVERNMENT.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Masterton, Last Night.
In reply to a deputation which placed the claims of the Wairarapa Aero Club before him at Wellington to-day, the Minister of Defence, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, agreed to grant the club recognition as an independent unit, entitled to the State financial and other assistance granted to clubs so recognised. Members of the deputation stressed the importance of the Wairarapa from an aviation point of view. The club was firmly established, as might be seen from its membership, the number of trainees appearing under its auspices, the engagement of a capable pilot, the acquisition of a plane and the measures taken to secure the establishment of landing grounds. The club was no mushroom growth, but was solidly established.
It was submitted that it was only fair that a district as important as the Wairarapa should .be accorded the recognition and assistance that had already been accorded to other districts.
The Minister said he had not realised that the club was in such a strong position. A very convincing case had been made out. He agreed to grant the club recognition as an independent unit. When the Minister was approached on a previous occasion he suggested amalgamation with the Wellington Club.
