SCHOOL COMMITTEE AFFAIRS.

The first meeting of the new Normanby School Committee , was held on Monday evening. The question of the formation of a school orchestra was discussed and it was decided to ask Mr. Reed to attend the next committee meeting on June 9 and give further particulars. It was also decided to invite all parents to be present. The question of raising funds was discussed, and it was decided to hold a euchre party. Mr. P. Linn donated the first ’.nd second prizes for men, and Messrs. Galloway and Sons the first and second prizes for the ladies. Mr. T. Pickering volunteered to provide the music for the danee to follow. After the May holidays the school is to open at 9 o’clock erich morning. The committee decided to again provide free cocoa for the children this winter.

Messrs. Spratt and Somers were appointed a visiting committee for May. Messrs. Spratt, Linn arid McCaffery were appointed a committee, with power to act, to deal with- the tenders for grazing.

At the annual meeting of the school committee the chairman, Mr. A. El Spratt, gave a detailed report of the work of the dental clinic. The establishment of this service is a step worthy of every parent’s support. Mr. W. Bennett, who has served on the committee for a good number of years,. did not seek re-election and as a mark of appreciation .of his services he was accorded hearty cheers. On behalf of the householders present Mr. A. Galloway expressed appreciation of the services rendered by the committee, the headmaster and staff. He Eaid that the school was fortunate- in having such capable men sufficiently interested to do the work. Miss Madge Fletcher has been visiting friends in Normanby. Mr, and Mrs. Hector Sutherland junr., of Matamata, have been- the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Linn.

Mrs. F. Julian io visiting relatives in Normanby. Mr. and Mrs. A. Paine have left Normanby to reside in Hawera. Mr. J. Edwards, who is an inmate of the Hawera hospital, is-progressing favourably.

SOUTH TARANAKI GOLF.

HAWERA LADIES BEAT WAVERLEY

A team from the Hawera Ladiee’ Golf Club defeated the Waverley players at Waverley on Wednesday. Foursomes were played in the morning, Hawera winning five matches to two, and in the afternoon Hawera won nine matches to three and halved two. Mr, James Scott Crabb died at his residence at Hawera on Tuesday. A native of Kinneff, Kincardineshire, Scotland, Mr. Crabb, who was 78 years of age, arrived in.N v Zealand 57 years ago as a passenger on the sailing ship Wild Duck, taking 103 days to make the voyage, and ..took up farming at Westmere. In 1887 he married a daughter of the late Mr. John Maxwell, of parkhead, Westmere, and in the same year acquired a farm, property at Manutahi, where he lived until 1907, when, with his wife and daughter, he came to reside in Hawera.

He was a well-known and highly-re-spected settler and took a great interest in farming and agriculture. For some years, until his health began to fail, he was a well-known personality among bowlers. He is survived by hie widow and daughter, Miss Mary C. Crabb.
