ONLY TWO FAVOURITES WIN

DAY OF EXCELLENT RACING. TE ATIAWA SPRINGS SURPRISE. Under ideal conditions, fine but dull Weather prevailing, with a cool breeze at times conveying more than a hint that the winter season was approaching, .the meeting successfully introduced the winter racing season. From far and near by motor-car and train, followers ot the sport assembled until by the time of the opening race there was a very large attendance, the gate takings being jequal to those of last year. The public had a splendid day’s sport, for field? were good and the racing was exciting. In each of the steeplechase events there were a couple of falls, but these only added a spice of excitement, none of the riders being injured. The course was in splendid order, as was shown by the fast times recorded, as the result of the preparation bestowed upon it by Mr. Alf Morse. Mr. C. O’Connor sent his fic’ds away well. Mr. H. Coyle closely gauged the merits of the horses and the finishes were very close and thrilling. Mr. W. P. Russell as judge gave satisfaction to the public. The winners were well concealed, only two first favourites passing the post first. The publicjiowever, were in speculative mood, the totalisator staff, in charge of Mr, O’Callaghan, handling £lB,038, as compared with £17,983 10s for the first day last year, an increase of (£54 10s. - The Egmont Steeplechase went to Ponjola, who was always well placed find went to the front about a mile from home to win well by two and a-half lengths from Matu, who finished fast to beat Airtight for second place. Of the Beven . starters Birkbeck and Maunga came to grief, but their riders, A. McDonald and A. G. Griffiths, respectively, Were not injured. The Hack Steeplechase also attracted a field of seven and was won comfortably _by the Waitarairained Waitaunaha, with Diana’s Lad and Democratic second and third. In this race Break o’ Day and Maidos fell, their riders, L. Jarvis and J. Smith, escaping injury. • The Mcßae Handicap attracted a field bf nine. Monsogne was the early leader but Merry Damon, who was last when the field turned for home, came like a champion to win by a good length from Manly, with The ’Swell close up third and Yoma fourth.

A field of 15 paraded for the open feprint in which a surprise was in store, as the little fancied Te Atiawa, trained iby J. O’Neill, taking the lead practically from the jump out, stayed on to win iby a long head and return Mrs. Graham easily the best dividend of the day. The New Plymouth mare Melissa, which had never looked better, was second and Havering,* after a long absence, finished third in a manner very creditable to his mentor, W. F.- Mantle.- Strangely enough the second highest dividend also was paid by a New Plymouth horse, Whenuanui, from Mantle’s stable. After the Egmoiit Steeplechase C. Robinson, the rider of Aurora Borealis, was palled before the stewards, and suspended for a month for careless riding. The arrangements for the conduct of Ithe gathering were splendid.. Music was dispensed by an orchestra stationed on the 1 grandstand, and it proved thoroughly enjoyable. The catering was of a jhigh standard. The officials of the club, particularly ftlie president (Mr. J. Gray) and -the secretary (Mr. E. P. Cox) are to be congratulated on the success of the opening ; DETAILS OF THE RACING. DESCRIPTION OF THE RACING

GRAY LANDS GOLDLIKE A WINNER

(By “Moturoa.”)

Elysian Lady was the only absentee from the Telegraph Handicap and Goldlike (£3'os) was a firm favourite over Tahoma (£257), Blue Paper (£168) and Patearoa (£144). Goldlike, Valstrcet and Anbridge gave trouble at the start, and when the tapes were released Valstreet was left a dozen lengths. Blue Paper, from the extreme outside, showing up first from Patearoa, Mangaharei, Tahoma and Ben Hur, with Goldlike well back in the bunch. Blue Paper opened up a break down the back and three furlongs from home she was four lengths clear of Patearoa, with Tahoma, Ben Hur and Goldlike at intervals of two lengths, Annoyer and Anbridge doing best of the remainder. Blue Paper was well clear into the straight, where Patearoa challenged, and at the distance, where the pacemaker was obviously dying, in Green’s hands, Goldlike came with a well-sustained run. In a desperate finish, Gray got the favourite home a head in front-of Blue Paper with Patearoa a neck .away. Two lengths back Annoyer headed Tahoma, Ben Hur, Anbridge, Mangaharei and Little Doubt.

Goldlike did not begin well and scored on his mefits. Trainer Harry Moss has him very well at present and he lias not yet finished winning. Blue Paper was obviously in need of a race and should strip a many pounds better filly next time out. Tahoma lost the jumpout and was scratching, but a big improvement can be looked for. Annoyer ran his best race to date and handled to more advantage might have given his few admirers a better run. Valstreet was hopelessly left and should earn a stake on the circuit.

WHENUANUI AT A FALSE PRICE

With Fine Acre and Captain Gazeley out of the Tongahoe Hurdles, Glenstar (£548) was backed down to even money, with Whisogne, second choice, carrying nearly £3OO less. Whisogne and Glenstar moved off first and were clear into the straight and past the stands from Royal Acre, Calithe, Vivo and Whenuanui, Tiega, who was fencing badly, tailing the field. There was no alteration into the back and five furlongs from home Whisogne and the favourite were together, three lengths ahead of Calithe, Royal Acre and Vivo jumping abreast, and Whenuanui and Horomea beginning to move up. Royal Acre dropped back at the half-mile and turning into the straight Whenuanui ran up to the leaders. Glenstar was first over the final obstacle from Whenuanui, but the New Plymouth-trained gelding wore down the favourite in a gruelling finish to win by a head. Royal Acre came again for third money a neck away, with Vivo .right up fourth, and Calithe and Horomea handy. The cut-throat policy adopted by the riders of Glenstar and Whisogne brought about the defeat of the Aucklander, and even at the finish Foster was not a .great help to Glenstar. Whenuanui won on his merits and was judiciously handled, Royal Acre was up and down like a rocking horse and might liave won had he not been allowed to drift half a mile from home. Vivo ran well, but Horomea was badly in need of the race and should make a big improvement Whisogne and Tiega were out of their class.

BRILLIANT LIGHT ON THE RAILS.

Royal Finance (£699|) was a hot order in the second division of the Telegraph Handicap, and Callapat (£356) and Brilliant Light (£302) were the only others seriously considered. From a good start Ngawhine was temporarily in the lead, but when the field settled down Winacre shot up to lead from Royal Finance, Paiko, Callapat and Brilliant Light. This was the order into the straight, the field being well strung out. Winacre gave up the ghost below the distance, where Royal Finance was in front, but Brilliant Light secured a nieo run on the raih and finished strongly to win by a length. Paiko and Winacre were a length behind Royal Finance, and in a big bunch were Statuary, Gueress, Potoleer, Callapat, Lucretia and Gowan Lea.

Brilliant Light was perhaps lucky to obtain an opening on the rails, but he won decisively and is right back to his best form. Royal Finance got away fairly well, but had every chance She was decidedly sore when ’site returned to the birdcage. Where the class

is not so strong, Paiko» and Winacre will be early winners, but most improvement can be looked for in Statuary.

WAITAUNAHA WINS DECISIVELY

With Calithe out of the hack steeplechase Diana’s Lad (£360), Democratic, Waitaunaha and Double Soult were all evenly backed, only £5O separating the quartette. Maidos, Double Soult and Waitaunaha began best,. but Break o’ Day tipped out at the first fence and Maidos led into the straight and past the stands from Waitaunaha and Double Soult and half-a-dozen lengths to Diana’s Lad and Democratic. The leading trio were together bn the bend, but at the six furlongs Waitaunaha assumed command from Maidos and Double Soult. Diana’s Lad began to move up about five furlongs’ from home and Maidos fell, leaving Waitaunaha eight lengths ahead of Diana’s Lad, with a similar distance to Democratic. That was the order over the penultimate fence and, clearing the last obstacle evenly, Waitaunaha went on to win by seven lengths from Diana’s Lad, with Democratic and Double Soult 20 lengths further away. Kowhatu was a long way back. Waitaunaha was produced a very fit horse and thus had an advantage over the rest of the field. However, his win was impressive and his clever fencing and speed will stand him in good stead this season. Diana’s Lad was kept too far away from the leaders and could not bridge the gap, but nevertheless he jumps well and will be harder to beat next time out. Maidos has not forgotten how to jump, and the race will do him good. PONJOLA’S EGMONT STEEPLES. Nukumai and Passin’ Through were the defections in the Egmont Steeplechase and a nice field of seven went to the post. Airtight (£5595) was always favourite, but a late commission fur Ponjola brought the Taunaha gelding into second place on the betting market with £598, anything else being quoted at a long price., The field moved off in line, Airtight taking up the running from Maunga and Birkbeck. Passing the stands Ponjola had run up to second place behind Airtight, and Maunga, Aurora Borealis, Birkbeck and Brigadier Bill were together. Going into the back stretch the first time Airtight had command from Ponjola, Birkbeck. Brigadier Bill, Aurora Borealis and Maunga. The order remained unaltered across the top and into the straight, where Ponjola pulled to 'the front and Brigadier Bill was. also going nicely. Over the double the second time Ponjola was clear of Airtight, Aurora Borealis, Maunga and Birkbeck. Ponjola made a fine jump at the six furlongs post to put a break of three lengths on Airtight, Aurora Borealis and Brigadier Bill. Half a mile from home Airtight had drifted and Maunga fell, bringing down Birkbeck. Across the top Ponjola was out well clear of Brigadier Bill, but Aurora Borealis and Airtight were coming again and Matu was moving up from an impossible position. Ponjola looked all over a winner in the run home and scored with his ears pricked by two and a-half lengths from Matu, who got up to beat Airtight for second money by a head, Aurora Borealis being half a length away. Brigadier Bill was not ridden out . over the last furlong.

Ponjola Was produced looking extremely well and the manner in which he disposed of this field promises- well for his future over the big fences. Matu finished resolutely and will not long be off the winning list. Airtight had every chance, but Aurora Borealis would have given the winner a more difficult task had she not made several bad jumps. Brigadier Bill was beaten by his condition, but he will be a many pounds better horse next time out. Birkbeck was going well when he came down, but he would have had no chance with the winner. .Maunga is a danger to any field and his sprawling over every fence nearly caused several mishaps. TE ATIAWA’S BIG SURPRISE. Bonogne, British King and Tenacie dropped out of the Hying Handicap, leaving a big field of fifteen. Hie public found°it difficult to decide upon a favourite and eventually Benzora (£426) wound up better backed than Ridgemount (£352) and Lady Quex (£345), but the punters were due for a big surprise when Te . Atiawa showed the way home. Town Bird missed the jumpout and Gold Dawn was momentarily in front, but when the field settled down Te Atiawa, Hopwood, Havering, f Melissa, Benzora, Paleta, Lady Quex and Atholspear comprised the leading division. Tc Atiawa was clear across the top from Hopwood, Havering, Melissa, Benzora and Lady Quex, but Lady Quex got on the heels Of the leaders and dropped back. Te Atiawa led into the straight clear of Melissa, Havering and Hopwood. Melissa threw out a areat challenge at the distance, but failed to -get closer than a long head to Te Atiawa. Havering was a length and a-half away third, with Atholspear

almost in line. Then came Lady Quex, Just So, Ruanui, Benzora, Hopwood and Chopin. To Atiawa won his first race for a long time and not too much notice will bo taken of this performance. Melissa raced solidly, but is not up to the best company. Havering was as 'big as a bull, and though he was not knocked about he ran a fine race. He was at a long price, but his dividends at Wanganui and Auckland will be smaller. Atholspear came from a. long way back and should do better to-morrow. Lady Quex. was in trouble from the start and could

not get out of the bunch. She ran ft good race, however, and will soon make amends. Just So came from the, clouds and so did Ruanui. Both will improve. Paleta showed speed for a while, but he will need a few races yet. MERRY DAMON’S CLASSY WIN. . Merry Damon eventually wound up favourite for the Mcßae Handicap, being entrusted with £577, but a good following for Mountain Heath (£496) and The Swell (£437) made the dividend a good one. The field moved off in line, Monsogne leading on to the course proper. Passing the stands Llanore was on the rails just ahead of Monsogne, The Swell, Merry Damon, Manly and Mountain Heath, but the last-named moved up on the bend and ran into second place at the six furlongs behind Monsogne, with Llanore, Manly, The Swell and Merry Damon next. There was no alteration at the half-mile, hut going on to the bend Merry Damon dropped back to last and Manly and Yoma went up on the outside. Monsogne and Mountain Heath were first into the straight from Manly, Yoma, Llanore and The Swell, with the favourite in. a bad position on the rails at the tail of the field. Monsogne and Mountain Heath had shot their bolts when the distance peg was reached and The Swell was left in front. Manly challenged and then at the half-distance Merry Damon sailed through the field to win hands down by over a length. Manly finished better than The Swell to take second money by a neck. Yoma was fourth and Mountain Heath, Llanore and Hipo were next. Merry Damon appeared to be in a hopeless position at the bottom of the straight, but he demonstrated the difference between class and second-class in the run to the judge. He is right at the peak of his form and over any distance he must take a power of beating just at present. Manly ran a good race. He goes better when kept away from the lead, and yesterday he was well handled by Broughton. The Swell had every chance and so did Yoma and Mountain Heath. It was simply, a onehorse race, and none of these will beat the winner if he is stepped out on Saturday, especially with the long straight in his favour.

MERRY MELODY’S LUCKY OPENING

Fourteen lined up for the Tawhiti Handicap and Latakia (£5625) was a warm favourite over Werata (£369) and Masher (£3255). Crennatown. was left several lengths at the start, Werata moving first, to lead out of the straight from ‘Tentcall, Merry Melody, Best Friend, Latakia, Joyspear and Mount Shannon. There was some squeezing going into the back stretch, the favourite receiving the worst of the deal, and five furlongs from homa Tentcall was out two lengths ahead 'of Werata, Merry Melody and Best Friend, vdiile Auctioneer had made up a lot of ground and was clear of Joyspear and Latakia. There was no alteration approaching the bend, and across the top Tentcall was still clear of Werata, Auctioneer and Merry Melody, with Joyspear on the outside. The latter began a good run at the bottom of the straight and had run up to terms with Tentcall at the distance. The issue appeared to lie between this pair, but Tentcall bored out and gave Meyry Melody a beautiful ruil on. the rails to win by three-quarters of a length, while the judge was unable to separate Joyspear and Tentcall. Werata was a close fourth, with Auctioneer, Latakia, Mount Shannon, Mashef; Corwen and Crennatown next. Merry Melody is a three-year-old half-brother, to Merry Damon, by Catmint, and the manner in which he finished on suggested that distance races will be -his forte. Nevertheless,' he was lucky on. this occasion that Tentcall made the opening for him, and in stronger hands Tentcall might have won. Joyspear came around the big field at the bend and did well to get in the money. He is an unlucky gelding, but he will do better. The distance and weight beat Werata, and Auctioneer did not get ft chance to stretch out. Latakia struck trouble throughout the race and was badly squeezed at ’both bends. He will make amends before long,
