NORTH TARANAKI HUNT

THIRD MEET OF SEASON

LARGE NUMBER OF FOLLOWERS.

ENTERTAINMENT BY MR. A. COLE.

Hard turf below and a cold grey sky greeted members of the North Taranaki Hunt at the third meet this season, which took place from Mr. A. Cble’s property, Ohanga Road, yesterday. It was excellent hunting weather and a large number attended, The country traversed was open grassland which sloped down towards the sea through o series of short valleys which terminated in a winding swamp-bed. Though a number of the fences had been sparred the search for the quarry led the followers later in the afternoon over wire fences which, however, did not present great difficulty to the more experienced horses. Unleashed by Huntsman J. Sexton shortly after 1 o’clock the hounds ranged inquiringly for’ well over an hour before a scent was picked up. The initial fence into Mr. F .Kartell's property was tricky, but the horses settled down and some pretty hurdling was seen. The field was followed by a large number of school children mounted on ponies. They had been granted a free afternoon and enjoyed the hunt, perhaps, to a greater extent than did the older horsemen. In addition there were seveial parties who followed and watched progress from vantage points. From Mr, F. Kartell’s property the hunt broke into Mr. A. Cole’s with the pack scouting and occasionally giving tongue.. Back, into Mr. Sarten’s place and through a bush-lined gully the hounds led the followers. The afternoon Was drawing on when the hounds picked, up a new trail and a hare was viewed. The quarry led the hunt through Messrs. A. Graham’s and B. Mabin’s properties but eluded the pack. A fresh hare was viewed and after a chase which left the majority of the field the quarry escaped along the swamp. The word was given to “pack up” and the followers cheerfully returned to Mr. A. Cole’s homestead, where afternoon tea was dispensed. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Cole were expressed by Master Halcombe after tea. He referred to the enjoyable afternoon and emphasised the debt of gratitude the hunt owed to farmers who had al-, lowed it to traverse their property. The Eginont-Wanganui Club, he said, had intimated that its members would not be able to attend at Mr. J. Barnitf’s, but an invitation to the northern club was sent, the date being the end of the mouth. As this was too near the point-' to-point, the North Taranaki Hunt would, however, he unable to go.
