OUTCOME OF DEPRESSION. WISE LEADERSHIP .NEEDED. An outstanding figure in financial circles of Australia, Mr. W. S. Robinson, is a passenger by the Aorangi on his way to London. During his. brief stay at Auckland he was interviewed by the Star and said that after a period of war and then a period of speculation, ut was only natural for the. “jolt” to come, and it certainly, had. arrived. Developing countries such as Australia and New Zealand were bound to be affected. “■The people think in the mass,” said Mr. Robinson, ’ “and those who are leaders of industry and others must find out how the people themselves are going, to respond to the conditions that have been brought about. 1 feel sure that the psychology of Australians—and New Zealanders, too—is slich that they fvilt rise •to '• -the occasion. It is-no use ■people sitting down under a depression and moaning 5 or crying- out about T bad times. They have to face the position. America has a great influence on world finance-arid has to some extent ‘cornered’ the cold, and it remains to be 'seen what use she will make of her power—whether she will use it for the good of the world or for selfish ends.
“A totally new idea of. values must bo brought about,” said Mr. Robinson. “1 am convinced that the • Australian worker has bis heart in the right place, but wlxit he requires is proper leadership, and this applies to industry as well. You can still put up a building in Australia cheaper than in London,” he remarked by the way. Mr'. Robinson holds the 'view that Australia and New Zealand are the two best countries in the world in which to live.
