WEATHER FORECASTS

METEOROLOGICAL- OFFICES. . BUILDING AT KELBURN. Work has been started on the new Meteorological Offices that o.ro to be built at Kelburn, Wellington, a short distance from the Dominion Observatory. The excavation necessary to make room for a basement is now practically finished, and within a few days the erection of the building will commence. The basement will be of concrete, and the superstructure, consisting of one floor, with a watch-tower on top, is to be built of wood. For several years past the Meteorological Office has been handicapped for the want of a permanent home. To find suitable accommodation has been quite a problem, and- no fewer than four moves have been made in the past four years. Records will be stored in the basement of the now building and the offices will occupy the ground floor. The watch-tower will be used solely as a special forecasting room. It will bo. open on ail sides tn enable observations, such as on the movements of passing clouds, to be made from it. The accurate making of such observations has been extremely difficult from an office in the crowded city area. It is expected that the new building will be finlshecl in ab-jui four to five niontha.
