KAPONGA SCHOOL CONTROL

. INSUFFICIENCY OF FINANCES. HOUSEHOLDERS URGE INCREASE. There was only a small attendance at the annual meeting of householders. Mr. F. Fallows presided. The personnel of the teaching staff had remained unchanged throughout the year, said the annual report. The inspectors’ report showed that good work was being done in the school and a high average of passes was maintained. A picture benefit for the committee had netted several pounds. Altogether £29 had been collected locally for special and general purposes. The annual picnic had been a success and the special donations had been nearly sufficient to defray the whole outlay. The picnic expendture (partly 1929 and partly 1930) had been under £2O. The financial operations of the year had once again demonstrated that the

capitation grant made by the board was entirely inadequate to meet the necessary charges on the general account, let alone any expenditure for .'improvements. The committee considered the time had arrived when a larger grant should be seriously urged.,, A credit balance of nearly £ll was shown at February 28 but accounts since due would more than absorb that amount. Considerably more' would have to be done locally for. the school funds. A gramophone had been added to the school equipment during the year. The committee had made an effort to secure a branch dental clinic at Kaponga but failing that 30 pupils had received treatment at . the Eltham clinic, sympathetic citizens placing their ears at the disposal of the committee for transport. The committee thanked the hoard and its officials for courtesy and drew attention to a supplementary grant of £5. made during the year. The roll number was 101 with an average attendance of 98, the headmaster reported. Seven pupils had made full attendance and five had missed only three half-days. Six proficiency certificates were obtained, and one competr eiicy. The inspectors’ report had been good.

The following'motion will be forward- Ifi ed to the Minister of Education: “That 1 thio meeting of householders of Kaponga draws the attention of the Minister for 4 Education to the inadequacy of capita- « tion allowances to committees of S primary schools and urges upon him the !$ necessity of arranging for an increase fe of the capitation allowance in order that school committees may be en- if abled to meet ordinary expenses out of such capitation,” L The chairman gave the following figures as the position applied to' the ® local committee; Capitation allowance, £5O per annum; expenses (ordinary), cleaning £35, fuel £lO, stationery £7, repairs, maintenance and sundries £l5, total £67; deficiency, £l7. A letter of sympathy will be forwarded to the relatives of the late Mr. D. J.' Kehely, who for a number of years had been chairman and . a member of . school committees.

The annual school picnic will be held the first or second week in February. - At a subsequent meeting of the new committee Mr. F. W. Fallows was elected chairman and the' Rev. J. T. Cossurn, secretary.
