RUGBY FOOTBALL
COMMENCEMENT OF SEASON. CITY DEFEATS WHAREROA. The opening of the Wednesday Rugby football season in South Taranaki saw City win in a scrambling -game from Whareroa by 25 points to 8. The match between Fraser Road and Ohangai was postponed. Play was scraggy for a long period, but eventually- the weight of the City forwards carried the game into Whareroa’s territory, and from a melee near the side line Cannon scored, Hart failing to convert. : The game brightened momentarily, but- it was evident from the la-.k of cohesion that both teams were greatly in need of practice. Several players were prone to speculat ; ons, and movements invariably broke down through fumbling and hanging on to the ball. After several attempts Hart potted a magnificent field goal. Some Whareroa forwards' infused more dash into their play, and a' dribbling ruck resulted in Clarke scoring beneath the' posts. Brown converted. - '“At the commeneem mt of the second spell the City forwards rushed play to near Whareroa’s line, an 1 from a serum the ball went to Norris, who side-stepped an opposing player and scored. Hart c inverted, lhe forwards again staged a rush, Mcßeth picking up and scoring. Hart again added the major points. Another City rush saw Kendall, the most consistent player on the field, score near the posts. The kick failed. Whareroa forced their way back and an infringe--inent gave Buchanan a chance of scoring a penalty goal. The ball balanced on lhe cross-bar and then fell across. Just before the conclusion Norris, in a solo effort, scored beneath the posts. Hart converted and the. final scores were: City 25, Whareroa 8. NORTHERN JUNIOR COMPETITION. Urenui v.
