AUSTRALIANS SCORE WELL

WORCESTER OUT FOR 131

BRADMAN 173 NOT OUT

WOODFULL BOWLED AT 133 By Telegraph— Press Assn. —Copyright. All the Australians played in sweaters in the opening match of their tour against Worcester. Even the bowlers replaced their sweaters between overs owing to the keen breeze. Grimmett and Hornibrook were an effective combination in keeping down rims, an hour’s play only producing 45 runs. Gibbons, the young professional who headed the Worcestershire average last year, Was shaky against Grimmett, but faced Hornibrook confidently. Grimmett, after an hour’s bowling, dismissed Wright and Fox with successive balls, both leg before. After lunch Walters and Gibbons improved the rate of scoring. Wall was taken off, after another brief and ineffectual spell, in favour of Fairfax. One hundred appeared for 130 minutes’ play. Two smart pieces of work by Oldfield dismissed Walters and Root. After a period of slow and shaky batting Fairfax beat Brooks, shattering his wicket. Grimmett, despite two and a-quarter hours’ bowling, was accurate and persistent.

Oldfield gained his third victim when Styler attempted a foolish run. Fairfax rooted up the middle stump again when he dismissed Gilbert, and two balls later he dismissed Jackson. The innings lasted for 165 minutes. The Australians did not miss a chance.

AUSTRALIANS AT THE WICKETS.

Woodfull and Jackson opened the visitors’ innings at 3.50 p.m. Both batsmen refused to nibble at the leg theory bowling. Twenty runs were scored in as niany minutes, the batsmen repeatedly sending Root and Jackson to the boundary. Woodfull’s batting was full of confidence. There was little venom in the Worcester attack, and when Root was taken off the scoring was one per minute. .Jackson was well caught at square leg by Walters. Woodfuil and Bradman were cautious after tea against the accurate bowling of Root and Brooks. Woodfull reached 50 in 90 minutes. The Worcester fielding was poor and Bradman, gathering confidence, hit harder and obtained 50 in an hour. When stumps were drawn Woodfull had been at the crease 145 minutes, having scored eeven boundaries. Bradman had batted 90 minutes, securing eight fours. WOODFULL’S CHANGELESS STRIKE. BRADMAN UNBEATEN AT 173. Rec. 1.15 a.m. - London, May 1. Woodfull and Bradman resumed Australia’s innings in sunny weather, the latter scoring a boundary in Root’s first over, the last ball of which struck the batsman in the leg. Woodfull reached 100 in the second over of the day, he not- having given the slightest chance and mistiming only on ball. Bradman made no attempt to force the pace until he reached his century. He and Woodfull then opened their shoulders, even to Root, who was keeping a good length. Woodfuil threw away his wicket in trying to lift an easy straight ball from Brook. He really hit at every ball after his century. His innings occupied 190 minutes and included 11 fours and one five. The scores are: — WORCESTERSHIRE. First Innings.
