THEFT OF LADY’S WATCH

PROBATION FOR LABOURER. Thomas Accott Speck, labourer, Stratford, was admitted to probation for six months at the Eltham Police Court yesterday on a charge of stealing a lady’s gold wristlet watch, valued at £4 ss, the property -of some person unknown.

Constable Townsend said that on February 22 he arrested Speck at Eltham on a charge of failing to maintain hie wife at Wanganui. Among his effects was the watch which, Speck eaid he had found in a boarding-house lavatory at Stratford. He had made no attempt to find the owner and did not inform the proprietor of his discovery. One of the young women of a travelling company had advised the manager of the company that she had lost a watch. Speck pleaded not guilty, stating he did not think the watch was of any value. He took it to a jeweller and had it repaired at a cost of 7s Gd. The jeweller eaid the gold in it was worth 3s Gd and the witch itself £2 10s. Under cross-examination defendant said he made no attempt to find the owner as he did not think the watch of any value. The magistrate: That is nonsense. A dislocated elbow and a slight frac-, ture of the forearm, were, sustained by. a young' boy Keith Climo at the Hawera main school yesterday when he fell down some steps on which he was playing. The lad was attended by Dr. R. G. B. Sinclair, who ordered his removal to the hospital, where it is reported he is progressing favourably.
