WORK WANTED
REQUESTS OF DUNEDIN MEN.
By Telegraph—Press Association
Dunedin, April 29.
A deputation of unemployed approached Mr. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, urging immediate work at 14s a day, better working conditions on relief works and Government canteens selling food at town prices. They urged that the Minister put on men at the Hillside workshops and the engine sheds to clean engines and wash and repaint rolling stock, also the immediate application of the department’s afforestation scheme and city relief works for men unable to go to the country. The Minister said the present Government had spent more on unemployment relief than any previous Government and would not let the unemployed down at the present juncture. He had Government sanction for the acquisition of a large tract of land in Southland for afforestation and was negotiating for more land near Dunedin which would absorb many men for live months. He would communicate with the Minister of Works and use his best endeavour in so far as the Premier made finance available. Inquiries would bo instituted about the possibility of work in cleaning engines and rolling stock. Concerning immediate relief he saw no reason’ why the charitable aid board should not deal with that efficiently.
