COMBINED CHOIR MEETS

NAME OF SOCIETY CHANCED. The annual meeting of the Stratford Combined Choirs wls held on Thursday night, Mr. F. T. Hale presiding over a good attendance. There was a membership of 47, all of whom were financial, the report stated. The society wished it made clear that application for membership might be made by anyone whether associated with a church choir or not. Weekly rehearsals had been arranged to lead to the two performances given on Sunday, November 3. By ’ special permission a charge for admission had been made. The society had obtained visiting artists from Hawera both for the orchestra and for the chorus.

Financially the society was in a sound position. The income had been applied solely for the recreation of the members and the encouragement of music. Thanks were due to the auditor (Mr. P. Thomson), to St. Andrew’s Church for the loan of an organ, to the borough council for lending and erecting the "staging and to the artists. The report and the balance-sheet showing a credit of £7 15s 7d were adopted. Mr, J. C. McDowall moved that the name of . Combined Choirs be changed to Stratford Choral Society. When the choirs- were first combined for producing choral work, he said, it had been arranged that each choir send a representative to the executive. This arrangement had not met with* universal approval among the choirs and he suggested that the name be changed and that the officers be president, secretary and treasurer, conductor, accompanist, librarian and three others, all to be elected at the annual meeting. In seconding the motion Mr. J. Edmondson remarked that he had been asked why the choirs did not give performances outside as well as in Stratford. He thought the choirs would be able to travel better as a society and would (receive a greater measune of support in other- towns. The motion was carried.

Officers'* elected were: President, Mr. F. T. Hale; secretary and treasurer,: Mr. A. E. Gilliver; conductor, Mr. J. Edi mondson; librarian, Mrs. IV. Pettigrew; three members to the executive;: Mrs. D. Steven, Messrs. J. C. McDowall and D. Taylor; hon. auditor, Mr. P. Thomson. A music selection committee consisting of Mrs. Pv. L. Garden, the president and the conductor was appointed. Air. J. C, AlcDowall paid a tribute to the work, of Air. J. Edmondson, who had held the choir, together and had instructed it admirably. Though bad weather had affected the attendances at practices during the winter and had handicapped the work of the conductor and members, a creditable performance had been given.

Other members expressed similar opinions and an honorarium of - £3 3s was voted Air.' Edmondson.

ELTHAM MUNICIPAL THEATRE.

A fine double feature will be screened at the Eltham Municipal Theatre to-night. “Senor Americano,” featuring Ken Maynard, is a story of the .Amerinia, and the most romantic period of can conquest of old Alexico, now Oaliforits history. The picture is- crammed with action and romance. There is riding and fighting and plotting galore. One of the most stirring features is a sword duel between Maynard and his hot-blooded Spanish rival in love. For a good outdoor this is “the goods.” Norma Shearer .stars in “A Lady of Chance,” the second feature. This picture is based on the story by Le Roy Scott of a professional gold digger who, after years'of experience at picking out wealthy men who were easy to “fleece,” selects a handsome young fellow who is firing his mother of a million dollar promotion scheme, and finds, after marrying him, that she miscalculated. This is a really good drama, backed ’by 'wonderful acting and gorgeous sceiies.
