TWO BOOKMAKERS CAUGHT.
FINE OF £lOO IN EACH CASE.
By Telegraph.—Press Association
Auckland, April 24.
Two bookmakers who were caught carrying on business on a large scale during the Easter holidays were each fined £lOO by Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. They were Archibald Anderson (29), who admitted using premises situated at Hobson .Street as a common gaming house on April 21 last, and William Alfred Mackay (38), who pleaded guilty to a similar offence on April 19, committed at the Newton Arcade.
Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that when Detective-Sergeant McHugh and Detective Nalder visited Mackay’s premises on April 19 they heard him “quoting doubles” over the telephone. In 16 minutes the detectives took 16 bets to the value of £l4 ss. from people over the telephone. Another client rang up and wanted to lay £lOO, but realising that he was speaking to someone other than accused he discontinued his conversation. It was evident that Mackay had been doing business in a large way. In 1927 he was fined £75 for bookmaking, and in June, 1928, and May last £75 arid £lOO respectively for keeping a common gaming house.
“This man is also in business on a fairly large scale,” said the DetectiveSergeant, regarding Anderson. Anderson’s premises were equipped with telephone, betting cards and betting slips. There was evidence that he was doing business on a large scale. He was no stranger to the court, as in August, 1927, he was fined £25 for assisting in the management of a common gaming house, and in June, 1928, and December, 1928, he was penalised to the extent of £75 for keeping a common gaming house.
