' The annual meeting of the Waverlcy Returned Soldiers’ Association was held yesterday, Dr. J. P. Duncan presiding over a good attendance. The thirteenth annual report stated: —We deplore the death of the secretary, Mr. D. D. Forsyth, who had acted since September, 1924, and who alwaps spent himself to the utmost in his endeavours to help the association. We feel it is not too much to say that it has been mainly by his efforts that the work of the R.S.A. in this district has been kept going for the last five years. The committee sent a wreath to his funeral, and there was a parade of over 40 returned soldiers Poppy day was arranged as usual, but owing to the Easter holidays it could not be held on a sale day. Thanks are due to Miss I. Cheyne and her willing band of workers for their services in selling poppies. Their work brings in funds which will probably be required more than ever this winter to help to provide a little work for out-of-work returned soldiers. Three cases of disabled returned soldiers were dealt with this year. In the first the medical and hospital expenses were obtained from the Government in the case of a man who had his pension granted last year in response to our efforts. In the second a very inadequate pension was raised to the full amount very soon after we applied on behalf of the man, and this made the case eligible for the economic pension and family allowances. In the third we persuaded the Government to have the man admitted to hospital for the investigation of his ailment, and this case is not yet settled. In addition, in the case of the widow- of a returned soldier we procured the necessary forms and sent them on completed to headquarters, and the appropriate pension was promptly granted. The committee would again point out to all returned soldiers in the district the necessity for providing the funds necessary to keep in active being the experienced staff at headquarters, as the Government Pension Department can be properly approached only by an organisation that has the necessary experience. Surely it is not too much to ask mon here to provide the few shillings necessary each year. This year the number of financial members is 33, last year it was 34. We know of about 80 returned soldiers in the district, and we hope that more men will remember to pay their subscriptions. Funds in hand at the end of this year amount to £74 13s. ■ fid., compared with £52 18s. at the close of last year. The election of officers resulted: — President, Dr. J. P. Duncan; vice-presi-dent, Dr. P. V. Graves; secretary, Mr. L. R. Neilson; treasurer, Mr. G. Mulholland; committee, Messrs; J. Newlanda, C. Johnston, C. H. Guttcridge, S. McMurray, D. Stewart, G. Stewart, D. McGorrery, J. E. Stevens and 11. Williams. PERSONAL. Mr. and Mrs. James Mills, Normanby, will leave on Tuesday for Wellington, where they will join the Ulimaroa for .Sydney. There they will join the party of Empire farmers to tour Britain, Ireland and the Continent.

Mr. S. R. Veitch, Hawera, who resigned from the position of president of the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Association on Wednesday night, received congratulations for the manner in which he had carried out his duties during his term of office. Mr. M. C. Crighton stated that Mr. Veitch had gone about his task with ability and enthusiasm, and had done a great deal to further the interests of returned men.

Mr. W. F. Morrissey, Hawera, who for the past seven years has acted as treasurer of the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Association, resigned from the position at the annual meeting■ on Wednesday night. His services during that long period were the subject of eulogistic comment, and a motion was recorded expressing appreciation of his work.

Mr. Charles Sutcliffe, secretary of the Gisborne Aero Club, is visiting Hawera, and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. Dowdle.

At the close of the Waverley Returned Soldiers’ Association’s annual meeting yesterday those present inarched to the cemetery and placed a wreath on the grave of the late secretary, Mr. D. I). Forsyth. FUNDS FROM POPPY DAY. So well did the public of Hawera respond to Poppy Day that last year’s sales were exceeded by £l6. The street sales amounted to • £lOO, compared with last year’s sales of £93. A special collection taken at the boxing tournament realised £l4. At an early hour on Thursday members of the Women’s National Reserve were in attentdance at street stalls receiving cheerfully from equally as cheerful givers. The appeal was made under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers’ Association for the fund to relieve distress among returned soldiers or the dependants of those who did not return from the war.
