FAT VALUES FIRMER.

As a result of the holiday week the entries at the weekly metropolitan market at Addington were small, and in consequence of the short supply, fat sheep, fat lamb, and fat cattle prices were firmer. . The store sheep market remained on a par with that of last week.

Store Sheep—A small entry of about 4700, and quality mixed. Competition was dull, but values were much the same as at loot week’s market.

Store lambs were penned.. in small numbers, and values for them were again a little easier. Values were: Good two-tooth Romney ewes, to 21s 9d; good four, six and eight-tooth Romney ewes, 17s 4d to 20s; good two-tooth halfbred ewes,'2ls to 235; ordinary twotooth halfbred ewes, to 17s; backward two-tooth halfbred ewes, 10s 6d to 13s; good two to eight-tooth halfbred ewes, 16s to 17s; ordinary two to eight-tooth halfbred ewes, Ils; ordinary spundmouthed half bred, to 10s; aged and inferior, 3s Gd to 7s; good four and sixtooth Romney cross wethers, 17s to 18s lOd; good s.m., to 16s 9d; good four to eight-tooth halfbred, 13s 2d to lis lOd; f. and f.m., 4s to 8s 4d; good half bred ewe lambs, to 16s 6d; forward m.s. lambs, 12s to 13s Id; backward and inferior wether lambs, 4s Gd to 7s 6d. Fat lambs—An entry of 824, the yarding including a greater proportion of light and unfinished sorts. Butchers’ lots met with keen competition and values firmed sharply, reaching in places over 8d per lb. Export buyers operated freely and schedule rates maintained. Values were: Show lambs, to 30s; extra prime lambs, 26s to 28s; prime lambs, 23s to 255; medium lambs, 20s 6d to 22s 6d; light lambs, 17s to 20s.

Fat sheep were in short supply, and in consequence values for both ewes and wethers firmed by Is and up to Is 6d a head. Values were: Extra prime wethers, to 32s lOd; prime wethers, 27s 6d to 29s 6d; medium wethers, 24s to-275; light wethers, 19s to 235; extra prime ewes, to 24s 4d; prime, 19s to 225; ordinary, 16s to 18s 6d; light and aged, Ils to 15s. Fat Cattle. —A medium entry totalling 387 head, and the quality poor. The shortage of prime beef caused keen competition for that class, steers being especially in demand and up to £1 dearer than at last week’s market. Cows were in over-supply and sold at reduced values. Best medium-weight beef made from 38s to ,41s per 10Mb; medium quality, from 33s Gd to 365; heavy.. steer, from 35s 6d to 38s 6d; good cow, 28s to 30s; secondary, 24s to-275; and rough down to 225. Values were: Extra prime heavy steers, £l9 to £2O 2s 6d; prime heavy steers, £l6 5s to £lB 10s; prime medium weight steers, £l3 to £l6; ordinary quality steers, £lO iOs to £l2 10s; light steers, £8 10s to £10; show heifer, £l6 7s 6d; extra priimj heifers, to £l4 7s 6d: prime heifers, £lO 10s to £l2 10s; ordinary heifers, £7 10s to £10; light heifers, £6 to £7 os; extra prime cows to £l4 17s 6d; prime cows, £9 to £ll , IOs; ordinary covys, £6 10s to £8 10s;. light and aged cows, £4 10s to £6. < Vealers. —A short yarding, and. values, especially for small sorts, were in advance of those of last week. The top price was £7 10s. Dairy Cattle.—A small yarding of 3£ head, and quality poor. Values firmed a Tittle toward the close of the auction Values were: Best second and third calvers, to £l5; good to medium, £9 tc £l3; .aged and inferior, £4 10s to £8; good heifers, £l2 to £l3; others ; r 7 tc £ll.

Store Cattle.—A small entry, with nc store steers entered. Cows sold up tc £5 10s a head.

Fat Pigs.—A medium entry of porkers, but baconers were very scarce. The prices for the latter were firmer. Choppers, £3 to £5 13s fid; porkers, 435. to £3 5s (average price per lb,' 8d to 9d); baconers, £3 10s to £4 (average ' e per lb, GJd to 7d). Store Pigs. —;A small yarding, mainlj slips and weaners. A general easing ir values and a dull sale. Values were Stores, 20s to 265; slips, 12s to 15s . weaners, 5s to os. BURNSIDE VALUES. . FIRMER TENDENCY. Dunedm, April 23. There was a general firming tendency, in the fat stock market at Burnside today. Fat cattle were dearer by from 10s to 15s per hc<ad, and fat sheep and lambs gave better returns than was the case last week. The penning of fat sheep numbered 1564 head, comprising mostly light wethers and medium ewes. Prime heavy sorts were in short supply. Values were firmer from the outset, and good prime lines were worth from Is 6d to 2s 6d ■a head more than last week, while medium and light sorts more than held thenown. The best wethers made to 3ds:, best ewes, to 275. Other wethers brought from 21s to 335. and medium and light ewes were worth from Ils to 23<s. Fat lambs to the number of 493 met with a fair sale at improved, rates for primes, and late rates for ojther sorts. Fat cattle met with a sale. 'There were 160 yarded, thpTquality being only fair with a;-small proportion of good prime lines. The market opened well with values from 10s to 15s a head higher than last week, and there was no easing. The best bullocks made to £l9 IOs; prime to £l7; medium and light to £l4. Extra good heifers made to £l5 2s 6d; medium to £ll, cows to £l3. Store cattle experienced a dull sale owing mainly to a short supply of quotable lines.

Both fat pigs and stores were forward in good numbers, although values were a little weak.

JOHNSONVILLE SALE.

SHEEP FIRMER.

An average yarding of all classes of stock was offered at Johnsonville on Tuesday by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd. The cattle yarded comprised mostly medium weight bullocks of extra good quality and a good sale resulted at prices on a par with last week’s rates heavy bullocks, if anything, showing an easing tendency. Sheep were of average quality, with a few. pens of, ptlme sorts. Butchers’ stocks were li-ght', consequent:•

Prices remain at the level of last week, except that potatoes are a little easier and sales are slower. To-day’s quotations' for potatoes are £4 10<3 to £4 2s Gd, or £3 5s on trticks to farmers. PIG AND POULTRY SALES. Newton King, Ltd., reports that there was a fair yarding of pigs at the New Plymouth Haymarket sale. There was a good attendance of buyers and prices were slightly higher than last week. Quotations were: Good stores, 22s to 245; smaller sorts, 17s to 20s 6d; . weaners, 9s to 15s. Webster Bros, found that during the week hens’ eggs sold from 2s 5d to 2s 9d a dozen and mixed hens’ and pullet*;' from 2s 5Ad to 2s 6Jd a dozen.
